Craving a midnight snack? Perhaps feeling like ordering in a McSpicy, or better yet, cooking a nice comforting bowl of Mie Sedaap?
Well, maybe you’ll want to think twice about your midnight snack after reading this.
Two more popular Mie Sedaap instant noodle products have been recalled due to pesticide found in the products.
Still sedap lah…
On Saturday, the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) said that Arklife Distributors have been directed to recall the Mie Sedaap Soto flavour instant noodles and Mie Sedaap Curry flavour instant noodles.
No wonder I couldn’t find those flavours at the supermarket…
Ethylene oxide was detected in the Soto flavour and Curry flavour instant noodles, bringing it a grand total of four products from the Indonesian brand recalled due to pesticide.
The affected Soto flavour instant noodles product has an expiry date of 11 December 2022 while the Curry flavour variation expires on 22 February 2023.
SFA added that it will continue to test other instant noodle products from the brand. With any luck, we won’t be hearing about more news on pesticide in noodles.
The agency is working with the importers and the Indonesian authorities to investigate and rectify the cause of the pesticide found in the various products.
SFA noted that “should ethylene oxide be detected beyond the stipulated maximum levels, SFA will initiate recalls of the affected products”.
Earlier on Thursday, two other Mie Sedaap products were recalled for the same reasons – the Korean Spicy Soup instant noodles and Korean Spicy Chicken instant noodles.
According to SFA, ethylene oxide is a pesticide that is not authorised for use in food.
I mean, it doesn’t take a particularly bright person to know that pesticide doesn’t exactly belong in food.
Although ethylene oxide does not pose immediate risks at low levels of consumption, long-term exposure may lead to health issues.
So please, check your cupboards and make sure the Mie Sedaap noodles you stocked up on for your late night snacking aren’t the affected batches and flavours.

Long-term exposure to ethylene oxide in humans can cause your eyes, skin, nose, throat and lungs to be irritated, as well as damage to the brain and nervous system.
It sounds scary, but it’s true. This comes from a report from the United States Environmental Protection Agency. It isn’t just a WebMD diagnosis.
The same report also states that exposure to ethylene oxide increases the risk of cancer.
SFA added that consumers who have bought the affected products should seek medical advice if they have already consumed them and have health concerns.
