We’ve all heard of the classic, eternal phrase:
“No pain, no gain.”
A notion that serious improvements can only happen with serious pain, the quote has since graced the lives of many, benefiting the happiness of some, and stunting it for others.
Yet, even as debate over the largely-controversial phrase rages on, one question remains glaring:
“No pain, no gain. But to what extent?”
Because as we find out in the following article…
Sometimes, too much pain can just lead to disastrous consequences.
2 Women Did 1,000 Squats & Were Hospitalised After Their Muscles Broke Down
We’ve all heard of the arduous process of gaining muscle. Break down muscle fibres, recharge with the proper nutritional intake and go to sleep, thereby allowing your muscles to repair and improve for the next hard workout session.
But have you ever wondered one thing? What if you exercise so much that… your muscles break down in their entirety?
While it might be a wet dream for the buffest bufflords out there, the fact remains that it might not actually be a good thing. And as these two women came to find out…
It’s definitely not a good thing.
According to China Press, Tang, a 19-year-old girl from Chongqing, China, decided to challenge her friend to a classic squat battle, which will determine the one with the better stamina.
The match-up occurred on 10 July, via video call.
Doing one squat at a time, the battle soon erupted into epic proportions, as neither refused to give up. End result?
They ended up squatting roughly 1,000 times.
Gains? A plethora of them.
But it all went wrong
Right after the intense squatting session, Tang expressed that her legs felt a little sore, but she thought that it was just a normal condition after working out. As such, she went to work as usual on the next day.
On the third day, however, she woke up to not only unbelievably sore legs, but also the notion that her legs can’t bend.
At all.
And it didn’t end there. After a trip to the toilet, she was alarmed to find out that her urine was tea-coloured.
Recalling from her training in the military that having tea-coloured urine indicates problems with the body (eh why we NS taught us tea-coloured means not enough water instead?), she asked her boyfriend to take her to the hospital.
And it was there that she was diagnosed with rhabdomyolysis, a condition caused by the death of muscle fibres due to muscle injury.
But it’s not just a lack of muscle mass that occurs, as the contents from the dead muscle fibres actually enter the bloodstream after that. Subsequently, the condition could even lead to kidney failure, and ultimately death.
A miraculous recovery
Thankfully, Tang was treated immediately, and she eventually recovered in the eICU (electronic Intensive Care Unit), which is like ICU but the patient is monitored via video cameras.
According to the deputy of the endocrinology and nephrology department, Tang’s swift recovery could be attributed to her youth. Had she been older, the consequences could have been dire, with acute and fatal kidney failure amongst the chief results.
A close shave, indeed.
Wondering about the other person?
As you might recall, there was not just one participant in the Intense Squatting Battle (ISB).
There were two.
So if you’re wondering about the other person, here’s what happened: while bedridden in the hospital, Tang called her friend who did the challenge, and voila;
Her friend was also hospitalised for the same condition.
Like Tang, she has also recovered, so all’s good. Though with that in mind…
You might want to abstain from overtraining, especially if your body’s not exactly acclimatised to rigorous physical training routines.
After all, it’s one thing to go all out to win a challenge…
It’s quite another to sustain dire consequences in the process.
As my mentor the Wise Old Man used to preach:
“One’s valiant… the other’s just plain dumb.”
