It’s a sad fact that the elderly are especially vulnerable to COVID-19.
Since those in older age groups are also more likely to suffer from underlying medical conditions, this puts them at even greater risk of severe illness.
Unfortunately, when a great number of them do get infected, a certain percentage will end up succumbing to the deadly disease.
82YO Man Dies From COVID-19 Complications
An 82-year-old died from COVID-19 complications on Thursday (19 Aug), becoming Singapore’s 10th COVID-19 fatality this month.
The man developed symptoms on 30 July and was admitted to Alexandra Hospital after testing positive for COVID-19 on 31 July.
He had a history of ischaemic heart disease, myocardial infarction, cystic kidney disease, and hypertension.
He was not vaccinated against COVID-19.
In total, 47 have passed away from complications due to COVID-19 infection.
36 Locally Transmitted Cases, 4 Imported Infections
36 locally transmitted cases were reported yesterday, of whom 14 are unlinked.
In addition, there were four imported cases, three of whom were detected upon arrival. The remaining case developed the illness during the stay-home notice or isolation period.
2 New Clusters; One Linked to FairPrice Outlet
Two new clusters were identified by the Ministry of Health (MOH), one of which is linked to a FairPrice supermarket outlet.
Located at Kallang Bahru, it currently has four infections.
The other new cluster is linked to an individual case and has three infections.
One new case was added to each of the following clusters:
- Giant (683 Hougang Avenue 8)
- SAFRA Tampines
- Westlite Juniper Dormitory
- Case 67343
Two new cases were also added to the Sengkang bus interchange staff cluster.
With the closure of nine clusters, we now have a total of 77 active clusters.
380 Cases in Hospitals; 7 in ICU
At the moment, there are 380 COVID-19 cases in hospitals, most of whom are well and under observation.
27 severe cases currently require oxygen supplementation, and seven patients are in critical condition in the intensive care unit.
Of these 34 cases, 27 are above the age of 60. 23 of them are either partially vaccinated or completely unvaccinated.
MOH reiterated what they’ve been saying for months, that the evidence proves time and time again that vaccinations help prevent severe disease from COVID-19.
Vaccination Progress: 77%
As it was a couple of days ago, the percentage of the population who have been fully vaccinated is 77%. 82% have received at least one dose.
In the 60 to 69 age group, 89% have completed their vaccination regimen.
For those aged 70 and above, 81% have been fully vaccinated.
Those in the 45 to 59 and 40 to 44 age groups also have high vaccination rates of 88% and 87% respectively.
83% of those aged 12 to 39 have completed their full vaccination regimen.
