Our daily case count may have dipped under 1,000 yesterday after two consecutive days of over a thousand infections, but it was overshadowed by a wave of bad news.
Two more COVID-19 patients succumbed to the virus on Sunday (19 Sep), taking Singapore’s COVID-19 death toll to 62.
One of the deceased patients was an 84-year-old man who was taken to Ng Teng Fong General Hospital on 13 Sep with symptoms and tested positive for COVID-19 on the same day.
He was fully vaccinated against the coronavirus.
The Ministry of Health (MOH) explained that the man had a history of heart disease, hypertension, and hyperlipidaemia which, together with his advanced age, made him more susceptible to severe illness.
The other case was an 85-year-old Singaporean man who tested positive on 16 Sep and was conveyed to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital two days later. He had no known medical conditions, MOH said.
910 Locally Transmitted Cases; 832 From the Community
910 locally transmitted cases were recorded yesterday (20 Sep), 832 of whom were from the community.
The remaining 78 cases were dormitory residents.
Among the local cases are 230 seniors above the age of 60.
Seven imported cases were also detected; three were detected upon arrival and four developed the illness during their quarantine.
New Cluster at SUN-DAC
A new cluster has been identified at SUN-DAC, a day activity centre for adults with disabilities.
Located at Chua Chu Kang, it currently has a total of 12 cases, namely 10 clients and two staff members.
The centre has been closed since 17 Sep.
Existing Clusters Grow
Several of our existing clusters grew yesterday, including the one linked to Avery Lodge Dormitory. Ten new cases were added to the cluster, bringing its total to 131.
Three of our eight active clusters linked to staff working in bus interchanges also grew. They are:
- Tampines Bus Interchange staff – five new cases, 172 in total
- Toa Payoh Bus Interchange staff – one new case, 254 in total
- Clementi Bus Interchange staff – two new cases, 84 in total
Transmission has been limited to the workplace, and there’s no evidence of spread to commuters, MOH said.
The cluster at pre-school My Little Campus has also grown to 15 cases after four more were added yesterday.
21 cases have been linked to a cluster at JMS Singapore as well. Transmission at the Ang Mo Kio manufacturer took place in the workplace with further spread to household contacts of cases.
In total, the ministry is monitoring 16 large clusters.
1,055 Cases in Hospitals, 18 in ICU
At the moment, 1,055 cases are in hospitals, most of whom are well and under observation.
128 severe cases require oxygen supplementation, and 18 are in critical condition in the intensive care unit.
Among these serious cases, 122 were seniors above the age of 60.
Over the last four weeks, 98% of our local cases were either asymptomatic or had mild symptoms.
82% of our population is fully vaccinated, with 84% having received at least one dose.
