This season is also about the glitz and glamour of the red carpet walks, and the anticipation of nominations and award winners for the year.

First presented in January 1944 at 20th Century Fox studios, the Golden Globes have long been honouring the finest in cinema and television, including both cast and crew.

Celebrating achievements in both film and television, the awards particularly emphasise international contributions.

There are 25 award categories at the Golden Globes, recognising achievements across drama and musical/comedy in both movies and TV.

In comparison, the Oscars, which are exclusively for film, feature 24 categories, including specific honours like Best Makeup, Best Original Story, and Best Visual Effects.

Best Films: A Predictable Success

Among the trending films of 2023, Oppenheimer and Barbie stand out prominently.

Many had already anticipated the winners of the Best Films category based on the top searches from last year.

The Golden Globes Awards presents four types of film awards: for drama, musical or comedy, animated films, and non-English language films.

In the best drama film category, Oppenheimer emerged as the winner. Duh.

This biographical thriller, based on the life of American scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer, played a pivotal role in the development of the atomic bomb, leading to the world’s first nuclear explosion.

With an 8.4 IMDb rating and a 9.3 Rotten Tomatoes rating, Oppenheimer entered the ceremony with eight nominations.

Other nominees included Killers of the Flower Moon, Maestro, Past Lives, The Zone of Interest, and The Anatomy of a Fall.

For the best musical or comedy film, Poor Things claimed the title. This 2023 science fantasy black comedy is based on Alasdair Gray’s 1992 novel.

Competing films in this category included Ted Lasso, Abbott Elementary, Jury Duty, Only Murders in the Building, and Barry.

The accolade for the best animated film was awarded to The Boy and the Heron, outshining contenders like Elemental, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, The Super Mario Bros Movie, Suzume, and Wish.

Last but not least, the best non-English language film was Anatomy of a Fall, a 2023 French courtroom drama thriller starring Sandra Hüller.

Released theatrically in France by Le Pacte on 23 August 2023, the film received critical acclaim for Triet’s screenplay and direction, and Hüller’s performance, and achieved over one million admissions in France.

Other nominated films in this category included Fallen Leaves, Io Capitano, Past Lives, Society of the Snow, and The Zone of Interest.

Cinematic and Box Office Achievement

Let’s take a guess at the winner for the cinematic and box office achievement award. Drumrolls, please…

And the winner is Barbie! Hardly a surprise, considering Barbie’s iconic status.

I mean, she was a Forbes most powerful”woman”last year.

The most nominated film, “Barbie,” which received nine category nominations, won two Globes.

These included the award for best cinematic and box office achievement, a newly introduced prize, and best original song.

Billie Eilish and Finneas’s “What Was I Made For?” from Barbie won the best original song.

Best TV Series

In the musical or comedy TV series category, The Bear emerged as the winner. It was up against Ted Lasso, Abbott Elementary, Jury Duty, Only Murders in the Building, and Barry.

In the drama category, the nominees were 1923, The Crown, The Diplomat, The Last of Us, The Morning Show, and Succession, with Succession taking home the award.

For the best limited TV series, anthology series, or TV movie, Beef claimed the top spot, beating All the Light We Cannot See, Daisy Jones & the Six, Fargo, Fellow Travelers, and Lessons in Chemistry.

Best Director & Screenplay

The best director award this year was won by Christopher Nolan for Oppenheimer.

Known for his Hollywood blockbusters and complex storytelling, this win marks Nolan’s first Golden Globe on his sixth nomination.

Despite receiving five Oscar nominations, including two for Best Picture and one for Best Director, Nolan has not yet secured an Oscar victory.

On the other hand, Anatomy of a Fall triumphed in the best screenplay category at the 81st annual Golden Globes.

It beat out blockbusters such as Barbie and Oppenheimer, along with other expected big winners like Poor Things, Past Lives, and Killers of the Flower Moon.

The film has been praised for its compelling storyline, suspenseful narrative, and exceptional cast performances.

Best Original Score in a Film

This year’s best original score in a film was awarded to Ludwig Göransson for his work in Oppenheimer.

A Swedish composer, conductor, songwriter, and record producer, Göransson is known for his compositions in Black Panther, the Creed films, Venom, Fruitvale Station, and many others.

Best Performance in Stand-up Comedy on TV

For fans of stand-up comedy, the Golden Globes didn’t disappoint. Ricky Gervais, who has hosted the Golden Globes five times, was a surprise winner for his Armageddon special. Remarkably, Gervais was not present at the Beverly Hilton when he received the award.
