As you may have noticed, the authorities often warn us that case numbers are going to rise so we don’t get alarmed when they do.
Earlier this month, Finance Minister Lawrence Wong warned that case numbers could exceed 2,000 if the virus continues to spread at this rate.
And while we’re not there yet, our daily case count is certainly headed for that number. Sadly, when that’s the case, a small portion is going to end up succumbing to the disease.
3 COVID-19 Cases Die Due to Complications
Three COVID-19 fatalities were reported by the Ministry of Health (MOH) yesterday (22 Sep), taking our death toll to 68.
The oldest of the three, a 90-year-old Singaporean woman, tested positive on 13 Sep. She was fully vaccinated, but had a history of stroke, asthma, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol which, together with her age, made her more susceptible to severe illness, MOH said.
The woman died on Tuesday (21 Sep).
Another case who passed away on the same day – a 50-year-old Singaporean man – was not vaccinated and had no known medical conditions.
Yesterday, a 65-year-old Singaporean man also succumbed to COVID-19. He had tested positive on 1 Sep and was not vaccinated against the virus.
He had a history of diabetes, end-stage kidney failure, and high blood pressure.
In just the past two months, 31 COVID-19 deaths have been reported, nearly half the total death toll.
1,453 Local Cases
1,453 locally transmitted cases were recorded yesterday (22 Sep), 1,277 of whom were from the community. The remaining 176 cases were residents of dormitories.
Among the local cases, 389 are seniors above the age of 60.
There were also four imported cases, three of whom were detected upon arrival in Singapore, while the other developed the illness during quarantine.
New Cluster at Dormitory; Existing Clusters Grow
A new large cluster has been identified by the health ministry at Woodlands Dormitory.
With eight new infections, it now has 54 cases in total. Transmission has been limited to the dormitory.
More cases were also added to two educational facilities: the LearnJoy Education Centre and My Litte Campus (Yishun).
The tuition centre now has 15 cases, while the preschool cluster has 28.
The Toa Payoh Lorong 8 Market and Food Centre cluster also had two additions yesterday, taking its total to 50.
1,083 COVID-19 Cases in Hospitals; 19 in ICU
At the moment, there are 1,083 COVID-19 cases in hospitals, most of whom are well and under observation.
145 severe cases require oxygen supplementation and 19 are in critical condition in the intensive care unit.
Of these serious cases, 134 are seniors above the age of 60.
Over the last four weeks, 97.9% of the local cases were either asymptomatic or had mild symptoms.
As of Tuesday, 82% of our population has been fully vaccinated. 84% have received at least one dose.
COVID-19 Case Management Task Group (CMTG) Scaling up Operations
Lately, residents have been raising concerns over a lack of communication from the authorities after they or someone in their family tests positive for COVID-19.
This is why PM Lee Hsien Loong said the health ministry’s CMTG is doing its “best to scale up” operations.
It has a “very demanding task”, Mr Lee explained, with it operating for 24 hours a day, seven days a week, in a “rapidly changing situation”.
The CMTG is in charge of the whole process for COVID-19 patients, from when they’re detected till their recovery.
