Perhaps as you are reading this, you may be younger or older than 23, or maybe just on the point of turning 23. Regardless, you may find this checklist of sorts interesting and maybe even tick off a few of the things that we feel you should have accomplished by the age of 23.

After all, at this age, it’s about time to think about being the mature, successful and responsible adult you want to be in the future.

Know your finances
This doesn’t mean you have to be financially independent, but it is important that you at least know how to budget, pay bills, and handle your bank account well. You don’t want your account to be in the red every month do you?

Take care of your health
There’s still a few years of partying left in you yet but it helps to slow it down a little and do something healthy instead. It’s never too early to start a healthier lifestyle. Your body and bank balance will thank you for this in the future.

Learn to cook
Get in the kitchen and perfect a signature dish that you can proudly bring to potlucks, parties or just to impress a new flame. Cooking at home is healthy and helps you to save money too.

Travel somewhere new and exciting
As you grow older, your responsibilities start to pile up and it gets harder and harder for you to take off on every whim and fancy. It doesn’t have to be expensive, you can start saving up your money and go on backpacking trips where you can meet new people from around the world and expand your horizons.

Love yourself
Learn to love your body and stay true to yourself. Learn how to be comfortable in your skin and respect your body, it’s the only one you have.

Indulge in some “me” time
You may be a social butterfly with a diary chock-full of events that you have to attend but it’s time to take a step back and have a personal moment to yourself every once in a while. Read a book, meditate or even have a self-pampering day to recharge your batteries.

Volunteer
Pick a charity organization that interests you and spend some time there helping the less fortunate. It helps you to empathize with others and teaches you to be grateful for what you have now.

Forgive and let go
Holding a grudge only hurts you, not the person that you won’t forgive. Take a deep breath, forgive that person, move on but learn from your past mistakes.

Constantly challenge yourself
Don’t get stuck in a rut and be bored of your life, you never know what tomorrow brings you. Join a craft class, learn a new skill or pick up a foreign language , these could lead you to exciting opportunities.

Cut off toxic relationships
You know that frenemy you have that is constantly undermining you? Cut that person off and get rid of any other negative energy in your life. It will be like a breath of fresh air.

Appreciate your parents
You are 23 years old now, and should be past your rebellious teenage years. As you grow older, you will find that the advice your parents gave you when you were young does actually make sense and is worth listening to.

Make mistakes
Make mistakes but most importantly, learn from them and do better next time. Success often comes after hard work and a stumbling block or twenty. You are still young, there’s plenty of time to rebound from your mistakes.

Learn the skill of rejecting
Learn to say no politely but firmly to things or people that bring more harm than good into your life. Your time is precious!

Try out an adrenaline sport
Get your adrenaline fix by trying out bungee jumping, sky diving or white water rafting. You are only young once and the pride and satisfaction of overcoming your fear is worth it.

Splurge
We don’t mean emptying your bank account to go on a shopping spree of course. Spend an eye-watering amount of money on something that you really wanted but always shied away from buying because you couldn’t justify the price. Sometimes it’s good to reward yourself “just because”.

Let loose
Let down your hair and do something crazy so that you have the best memories as you grow older. Of course, make sure it’s not illegal and wildly dangerous.

Be spontaneous
Grab a friend or even do something alone that you have just came up with, whether its a trip to somewhere, throwing a party or anything you can think of at that moment.

Drink responsibly
While being blackout drunk may seem like fun at that time, know your alcohol limit and occasionally, stop before you find yourself waking up with dried vomit in your hair.

Start investing early
If you already have a job, then take out a portion of your income and invest it in the right places. You will have a head start and a healthy sum in your bank account by the time you retire.

Knowledge is power. Reading opens up your mind and adds value to your life. If you don’t like to read, download audio books instead and never stop learning.

Go to a concert
Find out when your favourite artiste or band is coming to a venue near you or in your country and go see them. If they are performing in another country, you can even kill two birds with one stone and travel there for a vacation.

Take more photos
An image speaks a thousand words. Create and immortalize priceless memories so that you can look them over when the little details are fading from your mind but don’t be so preoccupied with capturing the perfect shot until you forget to live in the moment.

Don’t let fear get in the way
The fear of the unknown can be crippling and is precisely what is stopping us from pursuing our dreams and passions. If you don’t try, you will never know what will happen. Don’t let your life be ruled by the regrets and “what ifs”.
