Trying to get away with dealing drugs in Singapore is like opening your Netflix app and immediately picking a show to watch: you can try your best to do it, but it will likely end in failure.

Despite Singapore’s tough stance on drugs, many offenders continue to attempt to smuggle drugs into the country so they can make a hefty profit on it later on.

But, unbeknownst to them, officers from the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) are constantly working to uncover their operations and ascertain their whereabouts before the drugs make their way to an abuser.

In their latest bust, heroin, Ice (not the cold kind), and Chinese tea packets were involved.

(Don’t worry, Chinese tea is not a drug.)

Here are the deets.

CNB Seizes Over 4kg of Heroin & Ice Worth S$460,000; 3 Men Arrested

Three men were arrested and over 4kg of heroin and methamphetamine, or Ice, were seized in a CNB operation on Monday (3 May).

The three offenders are two Singaporeans, aged 19 and 55, and a 32-year-old Malaysian.

It all started when CNB intercepted a vehicle in the vicinity of Woodlands Avenue 8. After arresting a 19-year-old inside, officers seized a total of 1,720g of heroin and 1,028g of Ice from the vehicle that was concealed in Chinese tea packaging.

Then, in a follow-up raid, officers arrested the 55-year-old Singaporean at Woodlands Industry Park E3, where they seized 1,262g of heroin and S$3,837 in cash.

When officers searched his residence, they found another 218g of heroin and S$4,000.

This arrest led officers to the 32-year-old Malaysian, who was apprehended near Woodlands Road.

In total, officers found over 4kg of heroin and Ice which were estimated to be worth around S$460,000.

This amount would be sufficient to feed 1,520 heroin abusers and 590 Ice abusers for a week, CNB said.

Investigations into the drug activities of all three suspects are ongoing.

Over S$2.3 Million Worth of Drugs Seized Last Month

The 23kg of cannabis seized is CNB’s largest since 1996, while the 16kg heroin haul is its biggest since 2001.

The amount seized was said to be sufficient to feed 7,800 heroin abusers, 1,160 Ice abusers, and 3,380 cannabis abusers for a week.

Shortly after the operation, Deputy Director of CNB (Policy and Administration) Sng Chern Hong said the global and regional drug situation is worsening.

“It is concerning regardless of quantity of drugs seized. But to put things in context, the fact is that internationally or regionally, the drug situation is worsening. So, Singapore, we are monitoring the situation very closely,” he said.
