Every day, it seems like our COVID-19 outbreak can’t get any worse, because of how rampant it already is.

But we’re swiftly proven wrong the following day, as infections continue to rise and COVID-19 cases succumb to the virus.

Sadly, nothing change yesterday.

Two more COVID-19 cases have died from complications from the virus, taking Singapore’s death toll to 95.

The two fatalities are a 79-year-old Singapore permanent resident and an 87-year-old Singaporean.

Both women had not been vaccinated against the disease and had various underlying medical conditions.

In September alone, 40 people have passed away due to COVID-19.

Seven New Clusters Detected; One at Marsling Care Home & Six at Dorms

The Ministry of Health (MOH) has detected seven new large COVID-19 clusters.

Six are linked to migrant workers’ dormitories and the other to MWS Christalite Methodist Home, a care home in Marsling.

The care home now has 29 infections, including 28 residents and one staff member.

The affected dormitories are:

  • Jurong Penjuru Dormitory 1 – 48 cases
  • Jurong Penjuru Dormitory 2 – 44 cases
  • ASPRI-Westlite Papan Dormitory – 97 cases
  • 9 Defu South Street 1 dormitory – 151 cases
  • Cochrane Lodge 2 Dormitory – 62 cases
  • PPT Lodge 1B Dormitory – 73 cases

The dorm clusters were caused by intra-dormitory transmission among residents, and there’s no evidence of spread beyond the dormitory, MOH said.

Eligible Seniors Need No Prior Appointment Needed For Booster Shots

In another press release, MOH gave an update on its COVID-19 booster shot programme which commenced on 15 Sep, saying they’ve been “making good progress”.

“As of 29 September 2021, we have invited about 500,000 eligible seniors to receive their booster doses. 215,729 individuals have received their booster shots and another 119,000 have booked their appointments,” it said.

To make things more convenient for seniors, from 1 October 2021, all Singapore citizens, permanent residents, and long-term pass holders aged 60 years and above who have completed their second dose on 1 April 2021 or earlier, will not need an appointment to get their booster shot.

They can just walk into any vaccination centre, polyclinic, or participating public health preparedness clinic (PHPC) to receive their booster dose.

“Data from Israel’s nationwide booster vaccination rollout shows that a vaccine booster dose in persons aged 60 years and above maintain strong protection against COVID-19 without additional safety concerns,” MOH added.

“We urge all seniors who are eligible for the booster programme to step forward to receive their booster dose.”
