34YO FDW Charged for Murder of 95YO Woman & Could Face the Death Penalty

A foreign domestic worker was charged on Wednesday (8 July) with the murder of a 95-year-old woman.

According to TODAYonline, Myanmar national Sandar Htoo allegedly murdered Madam Ang Pek Chai at a residential unit in Recreation Road.

The murder is believed to have occurred between 12.40pm and 1.18pm on Monday (6 July).

Police arrived on the scene after they were alerted to a “case of stabbing” at that location, and found Madam Ang lying motionless on the ground when they arrived.

Paramedics later pronounced her dead.

The charges were read to the 34-year-old domestic worker via video-call, and she is expected to return to court on 15 July.

An “Extremely Nice & Personable” Woman

In an interview with The Straits Times, one of Madam Ang’s neighbours, who’s in her 80s, said she saw Madam Ang sitting outside her house a few weeks ago.

She said that the 95-year-old was “extremely nice and personable”.

“She had a green thumb, and we both loved plants. She even gave me tips on how to grow flowers. I can’t believe she’s gone now”, the neighbour said.

Htoo, the accused, will be remanded at the Central Police Division for a week.

If found guilty, she could face the death penalty.

Execution of FDW in 1995

In 1993, a Filipino domestic worker named Flor Contemplacion was charged for murdering another Filipino domestic worker, 34-year-old Della Maga and her four-year-old son, Nicholas Huang.

According to Singapore Infopedia, Maga had been strangled and her son had been drowned by Flor two years earlier.

Flor was arrested and questioned after they found her name in the victim’s diary. Flor’s alibi turned out to be false, and police arrested her on 5 May 1991. Two days later, she was charged for both murders and sentenced to death.

The then-president of the Philippines, Fidel Ramos, wrote to Singapore’s then-president Ong Teng Cheong and asked for clemency on humanitarian grounds, but was denied.

Flor was executed by hanging on 17 March 1995. Her execution soured diplomatic relations between Singapore and the Philippines at the time.
