More Than 36k Jobs On S’pore Job Portal, 40% Pays More Than $5K/Month

Much like good news, jobs have been hard to come by during the Covid-19 pandemic.

With businesses collapsing left, right, and centre, workers are being forced to take pay cuts, no-pay leave, or even getting retrenched.

And employers are understandably wary of hiring new employees, with so much financial uncertainty in the near future.

Today, however, I won’t be adding more bad news to the already mountainous heap.

Today, I have some good news.

More Than 36k Jobs On S’pore Job Portal, 40% Pays More Than $5K/Month

There are over 36,000 job and training opportunities on the national jobs portal, MyCareersFuture.sg, a third of which are permanent positions, reported The Straits Times.

A check by ST found that more than one in 10 of these jobs pay over $10,000 monthly and four in 10 offer $5,000 and up a month.

Many roles are in the technology and financial industries, including highly coveted positions such as business analysts and project managers.

Other sectors with the highest number of job listings are:

  • information and communications technology
  • professional services
  • wholesale trade
  • financial services
  • built environment

Netizens who have been raising concerns about the lack of high-level jobs in Singapore for locals will be happy to learn that most of the jobs listed on this portal are at the professional, manager and executive (PME) level.

ST reported that this is part of the SGUnited Jobs and Skills Package announced in May, whose objective is to create 100,000 jobs, traineeships, and skills training places for locals.

Some of the openings on the site might have already been filled up, however, as the Workforce Singapore (WSG) said some employers do not update the outcome of their job postings.

Building Up Local Talent

One of the hot button issues of GE2020 was the influx of foreign workers, something which the government has addressed with the raising of Employment Pass salary thresholds.

Many irate Singaporeans took to social media to express their displeasure about the supposed lack of high-level job positions, though sometimes in a prejudiced manner.

This is one of the reasons some employers in the financial sector are hiring more locals, as they’re planning for the long term.

Over 200 Applicants For Some Jobs

Just like me on the dance floor, however, competition for these jobs is stiff.

According to ST, listings for positions such as project managers, business analysts, marketing executives, accountants, and human resource executives, can receive over 200 applications on the portal.

But at least there are more high-level job openings available, right?

Higher-paid roles such as the ones listed in this article have not always been advertised online.

But since the government wants to grow the Singaporean core, more employers are advertising more senior positions to reach out to the local talent pool.

So, don’t be surprised if you see even more of these postings on the site in the future.

If you’re a Singaporean or PR looking for a job, be sure to check out MyCareersFuture.sg yourself.
