S’pore Reports 39th COVID-19 Death, an Unvaccinated 58YO Woman

With locally transmitted cases staying below 100 for the second day in a row, there should have been a cause for celebration here.

After all, we’re now entering the third week of Phase 2 (Heightened Alert), and the tightened measures are starting to have an effect.

But sadly, whenever you have a lot of infections, a small minority are bound to succumb to the virus.

And that’s what happened yesterday.

58YO Woman Dies From COVID-19 Complications; Becomes Singapore’s 39th Fatality

A 58-year-old Singaporean woman died from COVID-19 complications on Monday (2 Aug), making her the second COVID-19 fatality in two days.

A 34-year-old Ukrainian seaman died from COVID-19 the day before.

The Singaporean woman was a household contact of a positive case who visited Samy’s Curry Restaurant, and was confirmed to have the infection on 29 Jul. The cluster currently has 55 infections.

The woman had not been vaccinated against COVID-19, and had no underlying medical condition. In total, 39 cases here have passed away from complications due to COVID-19 infection.

12 New Clusters

The authorities also identified 12 new COVID-19 clusters, all of which were linked to individual cases, and ranged from three to six infections.

9 cases were added to the Jurong Fishery Port/Hong Lim Market & Food Centre cluster, bringing its total to 1,115 infections.

In total, we now have 112 active clusters.

92 Locally Transmitted Cases

92 locally transmitted cases were reported yesterday, of whom 30 were unlinked.

There were also three imported cases, all of whom had been placed on stay-home notice upon arrival here.

In total, 95 new cases were reported, making it our lowest daily case count for two weeks.

Yuhua Hawker Centre to Close

Bad news for residents in Jurong East: Yuhua Hawker Centre will be closed to all members of the public from 5 August to 19 August 2021.

MOH said it’s investigating cases of COVID-19 infection involving markets and food centres likely brought over by fishmongers who visited Jurong Fishery Port.

So far, it’s detected seven cases amongst individuals who worked in or visited Yuhua Hawker Centre, located at 347 Jurong East Avenue 1.

As a result, the centre will be closed to break the chain of transmission and enable deep cleaning of the premises.

All individuals who work in the hawker centre have been also placed on quarantine, and will be tested during quarantine.

“To quickly uncover any community infection cases, we will also extend free COVID-19 testing to members of the public who had visited Yuhua Market and Hawker Centre between 21 July and 4 August,” MOH said.

Visitors are advised to monitor their health closely, and minimise social interactions as far as possible, for 14 days from their date of visit or interaction.

As always, they are encouraged to see a doctor immediately if they feel unwell.

555 Cases in Hospital, 7 in ICU

At the moment, there are 555 COVID-19 cases in hospital, most of whom are well and under observation.

42 severe cases require oxygen supplementation, and seven are in critical condition in the intensive care unit.

Of the 49 cases, eight were fully vaccinated; six of them required oxygen supplementation while two need intensive care because of underlying medical conditions.

37 cases who have fallen severely ill are above 60. Six of them are fully vaccinated.

MOH reiterated that the evidence continues to show that vaccination helps prevent serious illness from COVID-19.

As of 3 Aug, 64% of our population has completed its vaccination regimen, and 77% has received at least one dose.
