Unless you’re Jeff Bezos or the owner of Sheng Siong, the last year or so has been a period of doom and gloom.
We wake up sad that we can’t travel, read news articles about how leisure travel will only return in 40 years, and then go to bed depressed.
In fact, everyone on the streets is frowning intensely at the moment; we just can’t see it because of face masks.
But it’s not all bad.
Even though we may not be able to jet off to a foreign land, there may be some fascinating new attractions right here on this tiny island.
4 New Attractions to Open in S’pore to Boost Tourism; Include Ice Cream Museum & Thrill Ride
Four new attractions are set to open in Singapore to boost tourism, as the country attempts to revive its tourism sector.
Thanks to COVID-19, tourist arrivals in Singapore fell by 85% to S$2.7 million last year, the lowest in 40 years.Â
Now, in an attempt to draw more visitors from abroad, the country is introducing four new attractions, including:
- The Museum of Ice Cream
- Slingshot in Clarke Quay
- SkyHelix Sentosa
- An unnamed attraction in Orchard Road
Here are more details about the upcoming attractions.
1. The Museum of Ice Cream
Now, despite what it sounds like, the Museum of Ice Cream (MOIC) Singapore is not a place where you’ll see old cups and cones of ancient ice creams from the past in glass cases with sub-zero temperatures.
Instead, the ice cream museum has ice cream-themed multi-sensory installations, which visitors will get to try.
According to Singapore Tourism Board (STB) chief executive Keith Tan, the Museum of Ice Cream is a popular attraction in New York City and their museum in Singapore will be their first outside the US.
If it’s anything like its American cousin, the Museum of Ice Cream Singapore will have an indoor Ice Cream Portal, a Celestial Subway ride, a Rainbow Tunnel where visitors can dance, and a Sprinkle Pool where you can have a quick dip into a pit filled with large sprinkles.
The museum is expected to open in the second half of this year.
2. Slingshot in Clarke Quay
You’re probably familiar with the GX-5 Extreme Swing, the freefall swing ride in Clarke Quay that would make even Dwayne Johnson scream like a little baby.
Soon, however, there’ll be something even scarier.Â
The Slingshot, the tallest ride of its kind in Asia, will also be introduced in the second half of the year.
In the GX-5 Extreme Swing, riders are dropped from a height of 40m. But in the Slingshot, riders will be catapulted almost 70m into the air, reaching a speed of 160km per hour.
Tickets will cost around S$45 for adults and S$35 for students.
3. SkyHelix Sentosa
If you’d rather not visit an attraction that’ll raise your blood pressure but raise you, you can visit the SkyHelix Sentosa, an open-air rotating gondola that will ascend 35m above ground.
Visitors of the attraction will get to enjoy a gorgeous view of Singapore’s southern coast.
The SkyHelix will be a short walk from Sentosa’s cable car station.
4. Unnamed Attraction in Orchard Road
You know that vacant site between Somerset Skate Park and Killiney Road?
Well, the authorities are planning to use the site to test-bed new concepts in Orchard Road, which include a brand new attraction.
While we do not yet know what the attraction will be, if it’s anything like the other three upcoming attractions, it’s safe to say it’ll have no trouble drawing visitors.
In addition to these projects, Tan said STB will continue to enhance its tourists attractions in Singapore.
So, don’t fret about the lack of leisure travel! We can have a holiday right here in our sunny island home.
