2,475 COVID-19 Cases Reported on 4 Oct With 8 New Deaths

Yesterday was not a good day.

After two days of falling COVID-19 case numbers, yesterday’s case count shot up again. A new, large cluster was also discovered.

Worst of all, another eight cases succumbed to the disease.

Here are the details:

8 COVID-19 Fatalities; 5 Fully Vaccinated

Of the eight cases who passed away due to COVID-19 complications, four were men and four were women.

All were Singaporeans aged between 60 and 94.

Three of them were unvaccinated against COVID-19, while five were fully vaccinated. All of them had various underlying medical conditions, the Ministry of Health (MOH) said.

These eight deaths bring Singapore’s death toll to 121.

2,475 New COVID-19 Cases

2,475 new infections were recorded yesterday, comprising 1,859 cases in the community and 601 dormitory residents.

The remaining 15 cases were all from abroad; nine were detected upon arrival while the other six developed the illness during quarantine.

Among the local cases are 402 seniors above the age of 60.

New Cluster at Daycare Centre

A new, large cluster has been discovered at Learning Vision @ Changi Airport, a daycare centre located in Terminal 1.

The cluster now has 12 cases, comprising 10 students and two employees.

Currently, our largest active cluster listed by MOH in its report is the one at Avery Lodge, a dormitory.

With six more cases yesterday, it now has 445 infections.

Like the other four dorm clusters that MOH is monitoring, the Avery Lodge cluster involves intra-dormitory transmission with no evidence of spread beyond the dormitory.

Two cases each were also added to the clusters linked to Pasir Panjang Wholesale Centre and MWS Christalite Methodist Home.

The fruit and vegetable wholesaler now has 282 cases, while the Methodist home has 53 infections.

In total, the health ministry is monitoring eight large clusters.

1,355 COVID-19 Cases in Hospitals; 35 in ICU

At the moment, there are 1,355 COVID-19 cases warded in hospitals, most of whom are well and under observation.

226 severe cases require oxygen supplementation and 35 are in critical condition in the intensive care unit (ICU).

Of these serious cases, 221 are seniors above the age of 60.

Over the last four weeks, 98.2% of the local cases were either asymptomatic or had mild symptoms.

As of Monday, 82% of our population has been fully vaccinated. 85% have received at least one dose.

53% of ICU Beds Occupied

Three months ago, just 26% of ICU beds were occupied. That number has since shot up to 53%.

The occupancy of isolation beds has also increased from 58% to 86% in the same period.

To combat the influx of critically ill patients, hospitals have added 74 ICU beds, which increases their capacity to a total of 187 beds for severely ill COVID-19 patients.

Speaking in parliament yesterday (4 Oct), Senior Minister of State for Health Janil Puthucheary said more ICU beds can be opened at short notice if necessary.

Well, let’s hope it doesn’t come to that.
