Before the COVID-19 pandemic happened, it used to be a norm for us to gather with our loved ones and friends on the last day of the year, have a meal, a couple of drinks, and just hang out as we bring in the new year.

After it happened, many restrictions were in place to ensure that the spread of the virus could be curbed.

This meant that there were no more large gatherings in each household, and everyone brought in the new year quietly.

Of course, while most people obeyed the rules, some people decided to live on the edge and try their luck at celebrating with their friends.

After all, it’s just one night, right?

Well, 44 people are now under investigation for breaching COVID-19 safety measures; and if they are convicted, they may be sentenced to a jail term of six months and a fine of $10,000.

Discovered Socialising and Drinking

On 1 January 2021, a report was filed against a unit located in Tradehub 21 along Boon Lay Way. The report said that the unit was allegedly being used as an unlicensed KTV outlet.

Upon receiving the report, police officers went down to the unit to have a look, and when they entered, they found 44 people aged between 17 and 34 drinking alcohol and socialising.

The police believe that public entertainment was also provided at the unit along with alcohol.

35 Charged, 8 Still Being Investigated, 1 Served Notice of Composition

Out of the 44 people who were caught, 35 of them will be charged in court on Wednesday, 21 Sep 2021, for not adhering to the regulations under the COVID-19 (Temporary Measures) (Control Order) Regulations 2020.

Instead of staying home, they chose to leave their place of residence and gather to drink.

A 25-year-old man who was caught on that day was served a notice of composition, which means that he has received a letter stating an amount of money he has to pay as a fine.

He does not need to go to court.

The remaining eight people are still being investigated.

While the pandemic has been going on for a while now, the cases each day are still very high.

We should all do our part to ensure that we remain socially responsible.
