How many of us love going to IKEA just to walk around and do some window-shopping after work hours or during the weekends? And while we are at it, we may as well get some of their awesome food in our bellies! It’s really quite amazing how a Swedish name so renowned for their DIY furniture can also be so popular for their snacks and meatballs. So what are the 5 best food items you should definitely try when you are in IKEA?
Meatballs! Meatballs! Meatballs!
Their all famous and awesome meatballs nobody ever gets tired of! I, for one, love them to smithereens. Who really cares if they contain horse meat? Seriously? I don’t. Because they are so delicious, it really doesn’t matter. Before IKEA came about, who even knew you could have your meat and cranberry sauce together? All this talk about those little balls of perfection are making me hungry now.
Gravlax
If you are a fan of raw salmon, you need to try this. Fresh salmon slices cured with salt, sugar and dill and topped with some fresh greens, this is the perfect dish if you are looking for something light and tasty. You may be interested to know that you will be consuming a very traditional Nordic dish too.
Chicken Wings
If you have not noticed before, try looking around at what the other diners have on their tables while they settle in for their meal the next time you are at IKEA. You will realise that almost every single one of them will have ordered at least 2 chicken wings (because that is the minimum order by the way). Why? Because it is so good to eat, it’s not real! Crispy skin and juicy flesh, I need at least 3 of these tasty morsels right now!
Hotdog
Their famous S$1 hotdogs that took the country by storm when it was first released. The fact that you can add your own sauces, and put as much as you want, just adds that fun bit to the whole experience. The dog used is really juicy and substantial and the bun is soft and fluffy. I always have mine with loads of mustard and chilli sauce. Delish!
Curry puffs
You may not know that IKEA sells curry puffs too and really awesome ones at that! I got introduced to them through an ex colleague and I’ve never turned back since. Possibly better than some of the more popular curry puff establishments in Singapore, IKEA’s version has a crispy and not too oily puff with a super savoury filling of potatoes, an egg and various other spices. At only 5 pieces for S$4, I always buy loads to enjoy at home in front of my television on a quiet Friday night. I can always diet tomorrow.
