Singaporeans love going to Johor Bahru (JB) for the cheap groceries, shopping, hair and beauty treatments and of course, food. While JB’s seafood is well known enough, not many might know that they have some excellent Thai food as well. Here are five Thai restaurants that you should try there.
Soul Thai
One of the modern and authentic Thai restaurants that is popular in JB. With branches in City Square and AEON, it is also easily accessible. However, we recommend that you head over to their headquarters at Taman Nusa Bestari for the best dining experience. The chefs are all led by Executive Chef Payup, an award-winning chef from Thailand. Their seafood Tom Yum Kung whets your appetite with its tangy and savoury taste. Mamasan Chicken Curry is also a must-try and has a full nutty flavour infused with the aroma of curry spices.
Address: No. 3G Jalan Bestari 3/5, Taman Nusa Bestari
Tera Thai
If you’re looking for a more posh yet authentic Thai place, Tera Thai offers a a fine-dining experience. The restaurant is nested inside a beautiful colonial building and the ambience inside is quite romantic. Try the Gai Bai Kapau (stir-dry chicken basil) which is which is aromatic and goes very well with white rice. Also, their Khao Phad Sapparod (Pineapple fried rice with cashew nuts and prawns) is also highly recommended. It is generous in its ingredients with the cashew nuts adding texture to the dish.
Address: 31, Jalan Abdul Samad, 80000 Johor Bahru
Bangkok Village
It’s easy to mistaken this place for a plant nursery when you pass by it at Kota Tinggi. You will feel like you are stepping into a garden at this place. Their Thai steamboat is one of the best around and they prepare their ingredients and soup fresh daily. You can choose from five types of soup. Be sure to try their hot and spicy soup as well as tom yum soup.
Address: Jalan Harmonium 3, Taman Desa Tebrau, Off Jalan Kota Tinggi
Carabao Thai Restaurant
Carabao means buffalo in Tagalog and you’ll be able to see a buffalo in their restaurant’s logo. Their clear tom yum soup looks innocent but packs a punch with its spicy level, just like those in Thailand. Green curry chicken is also another of their popular dish which is creamy and is generous with its portions of chicken.
Address: 16, Jalan Dato Abdullah Tahir, 80250 Johor Bahru
Pacheem Thai Food
Hidden in a little corner, Pacheem Thai Food is a homestyle dining place. They are extremely popular and crowded during lunch hours. Their fried kangkong salad is very addictive!
