Okay, this is it, man: this coming Friday, it will be the end of Descendants of the Sun: while it’s almost a certainty that the last episode will be a tearjerker, many have wondered whether it’ll be a happy or sad ending: is someone going to die? Are the two couples going to live happily ever after?

Would Captain Yoo still be promoted to a major?

There have been many speculations, and the team here, being hardcore Descendants of the Sun fans, decided to speculate what the ending would be based on the evidence so far.

Here’s the trailer for the last two episodes before you read our conclusion.

Someone will die
The CEO of New Entertainment World that produced the show, Kim Woo Taek, said this before: “My wife thinks someone will die…She’s always asking me who will die, but I haven’t told her.”
Well, here, his wife asked who would die, and Kim Woo Taek said he hadn’t told her. If he had said he hadn’t told her anything, then it would mean her conclusion is wrong, but he was indirectly saying that he hadn’t told her who would die.
Overthinking? It’s okay. We Descendants of the Sun fans have hyper imagination.
Conclusion: Someone, except Big Boss, dies.

The trailer seems to imply Big Boss is died or injured, but he won’t
Here’s the thing: sometimes, trailers are made to mislead viewers. This has been done once before in Descendants of the Sun, when we see a bloodied motionless Big Boss, only to realize he survives (of course he’ll survive since it’s just the 14th episode, Captain Obvious).
Nevertheless, in many movie trailers, dream sequences are often shown to mislead viewers. Maybe it’s yet another way to tell us that Big Boss will die…when he won’t?
Conclusion: Big Boss didn’t die.

The island with the shipwreck will be revisited
Because Descendants of the Sun ensures every single sentence or scene has a meaning, it’s highly unlikely that the place won’t be revisited. In fact, it could well be the final scene—you know, one whereby a reunion will take place.
Conclusion: Big Boss and Dr Kang had some kind of reunion there.

Sergeant Major Seo will die instead
The trailer shows how happy Lieutenant Yoon is when she hears the news that he’s back. Usually, this kind of scene won’t be filmed and aired—unless she’s to face some bad news after that. After all, the higher the hopes, the higher the disappointment, and the more viewers will cry.
Conclusion: Sergeant Major Seo dies.

Big Boss has to make some difficult decision
He either has to kill someone to save another person, or sacrifice his comrade (Sergeant Major Seo, perhaps?) to save other people. The whole idea of killing some to save many hasn’t been showcased yet, so this is the best way to portray that idea.
Conclusion: Big Boss sacrifice Sergeant Major Seo to save others.

Of course, this is purely speculation and if it turns out to be the real ending…then, erm, I think I’ll apply to be a scriptwriter in Korea.
