632 COVID-19 Cases Today (5 May); Total Now More Than 19K Cases

If PM Lee had not gone up to stage to tell us that the Circuit Breaker has been extended, you’d be reading this in a hawker centre while having your favourite bowl of bak kut teh at Kampung Admiralty Hawker Centre without fears of being locked up in prison even if you take an image of the soup and post it on Facebook.

Unfortunately, the plans we’ve made a month ago have to be shelved because we’re still wearing the same underwear that we’ve worn for four weeks, and there would be four more weeks left.

But now is a good time to take a look at our report card.

Back on 5 April 2020, there were 120 new infections, and back then, it was the start of the dormitory cluster. Clusters, I mean. On that day, the total number of cases was 1,309.

Today, we have 632 cases.

This means in total, we have 19,410 cases.

Out of today’s cases, 9 are Singaporeans or Singapore PR. The majority of them are residents from dormitories.

New cases in the community has been decreasing since we started our Circuit Breaker. Based on yesterday’s numbers, it has decreased from an average of 20 cases per day in the week before, to an average of 9 per day in the past week. The number of unlinked cases in the community has also decreased, from an average of 12 cases per day in the week before, to an average of 4 per day in the past week.

Single-digit new cases and unlinked cases? I’m so proud that days of having Maggi Mee and wearing the same underwear have helped.

And yesterday, during a Parliament Sitting, it’s revealed that there are three main indicators to open up the country.

3 Main Indicators to Gradually Open Up the Country

Countries all over the world have started to ease their restrictions, and in Singapore, Health Minister Gan Kim Yong has listed down three indicators to open up the country:

Number of Cases
We would need to lower our community cases to “zero or single-digits daily, with very low numbers of unlinked cases, not just for one day, but sustained over a period of time.” Also, there must be a fall in the number of migrant worker infections.

Global Situation
Singapore is also looking at how the outbreak unfold globally, because we would eventually need to open up the country if not Merlion would die of boredom. He said, “We would review the rate of transmissions in other countries, as well as what they have done to contain spread.”

Singapore System in Place
There must also be a system that ensures that after opening up, there won’t be another wave of infections. It’s no fun having ten Circuit Breakers in a year. He said that we must “step up our capability and capacity to test and detect cases early, contact trace quickly, promptly ringfence close contacts, and establish the original source of the infection to stop other undetected transmission chains, if any.”
