On 2 Oct and 3 Oct, the number of new COVID-19 cases fell from the previous day’s tally.
This gave us the impression that our daily case count might keep decreasing or at least hover around the same number.
But we forgot that the coronavirus enjoys giving us false hope.
On 4 Oct, cases rose to 2,475, and yesterday, we had a record-breaking number of new infections.
We also, unfortunately, had news that nine more COVID-19 cases had succumbed to the disease.
Here are the details:
Nine COVID-19 Fatalities
Of the nine COVID-19 fatalities, six were men and three were women. They were aged between 64 and 90.
Three of them were unvaccinated against COVID-19, two were partially vaccinated, and four had been fully vaccinated.
All of them had various underlying medical conditions.
With these nine deaths, Singapore’s death toll now stands at 130.
Record 3,486 New COVID-19 Cases
A record 3,486 new COVID-19 cases were reported yesterday (5 Oct), comprising 2,767 cases in the community and 713 dormitory residents.
The remaining six cases are from abroad; three were detected upon arrival in Singapore while three developed the illness during quarantine.
Among the local cases are 643 seniors above the age of 60.
New Cluster at Nursing Home in Toa Payoh
A new, large cluster has been discovered by the Ministry of Health (MOH) at United Medicare Centre (Toa Payoh).
With seven new cases, it now has 14 infections, comprising eight staff members and six residents.
Another case was also added to the Learning Vision @ Changi Airport cluster, taking its total to 13 cases.
Three dormitory clusters were also listed by MOH, namely:
- ASPRI-Westlite Papan Dormitory – 11 new cases, 167 in total
- Tampines Dormitory – five new cases, 174 in total
- Jurong Penjuru Dormitory 2 – 13 new cases, 101 in total
In all the dorm clusters, intra-dormitory transmission was the cause of infections, with no evidence of spread beyond the dormitory.
1,512 COVID-19 Cases in Hospital; 34 in ICU
At the moment, there are 1,512 COVID-19 cases warded in hospitals, most of whom are well and under observation.
247 severe cases require oxygen supplementation and 34 are in critical condition in the intensive care unit.
Of these serious cases, 235 are seniors above the age of 60.
Over the last four weeks, 98.3% of the local cases were either asymptomatic or had mild symptoms.
As of Monday, 83% of our population has been fully vaccinated. 85% have received at least one dose.
Suspension of Visits to Residential Care Homes Extended
On 12 September, MOH announced the suspension of in-person visits at all residential care homes until 11 Oct.
This was due to the rising number of COVID-19 cases among staff and residents at these homes.
Since then, several other clusters have been identified at residential care homes, and cases in the community have continued to rise.
This is why the health ministry is extending the suspension of in-person visits to all residential care homes to 24 October 2021.
“This is in line with the Stabilisation Phase and will reduce the risk of transmission of COVID-19 from the community to the Homes,” MOH said in a news release.
“The extension will also provide more time for our seniors in the Homes to get vaccinated or receive their booster shots.
“We seek the understanding and cooperation of all Singaporeans as we continue to implement measures to protect our seniors,” it added.
