While we all try to eat healthy these days, we assume that healthy eating means eating salad. So each time when we’re out with our friends, we pick places that serve salads or food that we deem are healthy. We pick all the right vegetables and protein in our salad and top it off with a modest portion of our favorite salad dressing.
There’s nothing wrong with eating a hearty salad that can pack your body with all the antioxidants and protein you need, at least until you decide to sabotage your healthy eating by adding a bunch of high-calorie dressing. In fact, my friend, it might just be worse than eating a burger.
Honey Mustard
We all know how popular this dressing is with all the ‘heathy’ people out there, and many, including us, love seeing this heavenly sauce drizzled onto salads, sandwiches and even on our delicious steaks. Heck, most of us order our subways with honey mustard in it.
But do you know that two tablespoon of honey mustard contains 130 calories and 11 grams of fat? Not to mention that it has literally almost no vitamins or nutritional contents. Not only are you putting extra calories into your body, you’re also eating something that does more harm than help to your body.
Caesar dressing
One of the most common dressing that can be found in almost every salad store, a caesar salad dressing contains egg yolks, vegetable oil, canned anchovies and grated Parmesan. Just two tablespoons contains a whopping 160 calories, 18% of which are fats. Just four tablespoon of dressing and it would total to approximately 320 calories.
Want to hear something else? AÂ double patty burger only contains about 295 calories. So if you love to drench your salad with dressing, we would suggest opting for a low calorie or fat-free version.
Thousand Island
Thousand Island dressing is a mayonnaise-based salad spread and we’re sure that most of you are aware of how fattening mayonnaise can be. Two tablespoons of thousand island contains about 120 calories, and about 14g of fat – not the good kind either!
A study comparing leading brands showed that there is zero nutritional benefit in consuming Thousand Island dressing. However, there are brands that have zero calorie in them, but do keep an eye out as they usually contain a fairly high amount of sodium instead.
Ranch
Two tablespoons of Ranch dressing contains about 146 calories. It combines ingredients like mayonnaise, buttermilk, lemon juice, herbs and spices. It is also known for its high fat, calories and sodium content. For example, two tablespoons have around 146 calories, in which 130 of those calories are just fats! Not to mention it is super high in sodium, with nearly 627.1mg per serving (almost half of the recommended sodium intake). No, just stay away from ranch. It’s not worth it.
Creamy Italian dressings
Don’t get us wrong, Italian dressing can be healthy. The ones with olive oil, balsamic vinegar and a dash of Italian seasoning. However, with creamy Italian dressings, there’s about 100 calories in just two tablespoons. This is because there’s an addition of mayonnaise or mustard within the sauce, causing the entire thing to become unhealthy.
So if you’re wondering why your weight loss plan isn’t working or you’re gaining more than you lose, this might be the reason. All in all, eat in moderation. If you’re only eating Caesar dressing once every month, that’s totally fine. And remember, a little dressing goes a long way – don’t drench your entire salad with it!
