Singapore To Invest US$2 Billion In Green Funds To “Drive Climate Action”

Singapore will invest US$2 billion (S$2.7 billion) in green funds as part of its plan to be the world’s leading centre for green finance.

On Monday (Nov 11), Education Minister Ong Ye Kun said the country has to “make finance green, to drive climate action” which in turn will fuel the fight against climate change.

Green finance involves making sure financial services such as borrowing and lending, as well as investing bring environmentally positive outcomes, including dealing with climate change.

Mr Ong also unveiled numerous other initiatives as part of the Monetary Authority of Singapore’s (MAS) green action plan.

20YO E-scooter Rider Charged Over Bedok Accident That Killed Cyclist

Malaysian Hung Kee Boon, 20, was charged on Monday (Nov 11) with causing the death of logistics assistant packer Ong Bee Eng, 65, by performing a rash act.

Hung allegedly killed Mrs Ong in an e-scooter accident in Bedok North in September. She was then cycling home after attending a wake.

After the accident, she fell into a coma and died four days later.

Ex-baggage Handler Who Swapped Tags Of 286 Pieces Of Luggage Gets Jail For 20 Days

Tay Boon Keh was sentenced to 20 days’ jail for mischief after he swapped 286 pieces of luggage belonging to passengers of Singapore Airlines (SIA) and SilkAir.

The 66-year-old swapped the luggage bags because he was unhappy with his duties.

The luggage bags ended up at the wrong destinations as a result of his misdeed, and the two carriers had to pay compensation totalling more than $42,000 to 221 affected passengers.

Doorstep Collection Service For Recyclables Launched In Woodlands 

A doorstep collection service has been launched in certain Woodlands estates as part of a pilot programme by Sembcorp Industries to make recycling more convenient.

This programme is only for households with postal codes starting with “73” in the Woodlands area.

Residents can now book a collection date and time for recyclables through SembCorp’s ezi mobile application. There are two collection dates per month and three to five time slots for each date.

New Air-conditioned Underpass To Open At Stevens MRT Station On Nov 23

A new air-conditioned underpass will open at Stevens MRT station on Nov 23, connecting commuters from the MRT station directly to Dunearn Road and Whitley Road.

Pedestrians around the area “will be able to enjoy better and safer connectivity” crossing Dunearn Road and Bukit Timah Road said LTA in a Facebook post. 

The 65m-long underpass was constructed using a rectangular tunnel boring machine. This method maximises the use of tunnel space and enables work to completed smoothly.
