Haze: Schools Open As Usual But Might Close If Haze Worsens; Measures Put In Place
The National Environment Agency (NEA) has stated that despite the visibility, air quality might not be as bad as it seems.
According to a Facebook post by NEA, water vapour in the air scatters light, which results in lower visibility.
PSI levels as of 16 September 10am were hovering around the moderate range, between 77 to 86. This allows students to still be able to go to school.
PSI levels above 100 are generally considered unsafe.
The government will consider closing schools when the forecast for the next day is “hazardous”, which is when the 24 hour PSI goes above 300.

Teen Who Raped And Robbed Sex Worker Gets 7 Years’ Jail And 15 Strokes Of The Cane
Mendel See Li Quan,19, pleaded guilty to one charge each of raping and robbing a 53-year-prostitute on Oct 2, 2017.
A third charge of stealing $670 from another victim in September 2017 was also considered, along with 8 more charges.

See, a Malaysian, got together with two other Singaporeans in 2017 and proposed that they would rob prostitutes.
He contacted the 53-year-old victim on 1 October 2017 to meet at his condominium where he proceeded to commit the crime.
On Monday, Deputy Public Prosecutor Gail Wong sought 9 years’ jail and 15 strokes of the cane for See.

Singapore Prison Service To Rename Newsletter As Current One Suggests Control & Oppression
The newsletter which has been named “Panopticon” since 2009 was only made public in July and is on the Singapore Prison Service’s website.

Screenshots of the newsletter were shared over 500 times on Facebook with many netizens expressing their disbelief.
Contrary to the title, the newsletter covers a variety of content. Such content includes interviews with prison officers and other rehabilitation initiatives.
However, they understand that the name could be easily misinterpreted to convey negative imagery and will look into replacing it with a more appropriate one.

Cybersecurity Firms Welcome to Set Up Base In Singapore: Teo Chee Hean
Senior Minister Teo Chee Hean said on 16 September that cybersecurity firms can use Singapore’s global networks for cross-border collaboration.

He feels that this is crucial, as online security is an international field.
Mr Teo said with the increasing dangers that cyber threats pose, Singapore needs private cybersecurity companies to help increase its online defences.
Companies like Ensign, which provide online cybersecurity solutions globally, have also announced plans to increase their staff by 100.
Other foreign cybersecurity have also chosen to set up an office here over the last few years.

Second Singaporean Charged with Terrorism Financing
Back in April, 35-year-old Imran Kassim became the first Singaporean to be charged under section 4(a) of the Terrorism (Suppression of Financing) Act, Chapter 325, after he was caught to have provided $450 in 2014 to support propaganda efforts by terrorist group ISIS.

Yesterday, it’s revealed that a second Singaporean is being charged as well. 34-year-old Ahmed Hussein Abdul Kadir Sheik Uduman had allegedly given $1,059 and USD$62 (~S$86) to a person, who was facilitating terrorist acts, in 2016.
If convicted, Hussein could be jailed for up to 10 years, fined up to S$500,000, or both.
