MOH & SFA Investigating After 18 Cases of Typhoid Fever in Less Than a Month

News of food poisoning hasn’t slowed down, for the authorities are now conducting investigations after an outbreak of typhoid fever, which is transmitted via consuming contaminated food or water. From 13 July to 4 August, there were 18 local cases of typhoid fever.

Typhoid fever is treatable but also preventable, so the authorities are interviewing the infected individuals to trace where they buy/consume the food from.

Police Arrested Three Men Involved in Fight That Was Filmed & Circulated in Facebook

On Saturday, a video of three men fighting in Redhill made the rounds in Facebook. In the video, a GrabFood rider was also spotted stopping his bike to break up the fight.

Apparently, it happened at Blk 88 Redhill Close at about 11:30 a.m. The police have arrested three people aged between 17 and 55. The cause of the fight is still unknown, though.

Singapore Now Aims to Qualify for World Cup 2034

Remember Goal 2010? It was Singapore’s target to qualify for the World Cup finals in 2010, and we kind of failed miserably.

Now, Singapore is setting a new target, because a goal without a deadline is merely a dream: the new deadline is 2034, a good 15 years away. Other than trying our best, there are also some changes to the World Cup format: from 2026, the number of teams in the finals would be 48 instead of 32, with the number of Asian countries doubled.

So, can we finally watch the World Cup for free, since our qualification would have surely brought in a sponsor to buy the TV licence for us? Let’s wait.

Search for Remaining Singapore Kayaker Expanded

On 8 August 2019, two Singaporean kayakers went missing while kayaking in JB. The body of one of them has been found while the search for the second kayaker is still ongoing.

Malaysian authorities have since expanded the search area to 300 square nautical miles, which is about 1,029 square kilometres.

They have also called on all seafarers and people with any information about the incident to inform the authorities.

National Day Rally 2019

Yesterday night, Prime Minister Lee gave the annual National Day Rally. Below are the important points that he spoke about:

  • The trade war between the US and China would affect Singapore, but the Government is prepared should it become worse
  • More pre-school subsidies will be available as the incoming ceiling is raised from $7,500 to $12,000, allowing 30,000 more households to qualify for it
  • School fees for two universities, SIT and SUSS, will be lowered, and all university and poly students will get higher bursaries.
  • Retirement age will be increased to 65 by 2030 and CPF contributions for workers above 55 will be increased, but there is no change in the withdrawal ages
  • As rising sea levels would affect Singapore, Singapore would be working to prevent any repercussions from the climate change, calling it “climate change defences”
  • Greater Southern Waterfront, an area along the southern coastline, will be developed into an area to live, work and play.
  • Sentosa will be developed with Pulau Brani (an island near Sentosa) with new attractions
