Proposed Changes To Maintenance of Religious Harmony Act (MRHA) To Allow Immediate Takedown Of Offensive Posts
With social media in full force, news can get around pretty quickly. This includes any offensive posts against religion that may disrupt the harmony in Singapore.
Currently, if the government wants to stop an online post that infringes the MRHA principles, a 14-day notice would be given to the person involved and they’d have to wait for the person or group to provide their views to the Presidential Council for Religious Harmony.
Instead, the proposed changes would allow the government to order an immediate takedown to stop the post from circulating. The information was released in a press release by the Ministry of Home Affairs.
