Singapore Schools Ask Parents & Staff To Declare Weekend Travel Plans Due To Wuhan Virus

Due to the spread of the mysterious Wuhan virus, pre-schools in Singapore have stepped up measures to protect their students from the pandemic.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Social and Family Development (MSF) said it issued advisories on Wednesday (Jan 22) to pre-schools and student care centres to inform them of precautionary measures to ensure the well-being of children and staff.

Pre-school staff have been advised to defer non-essential travel to Wuhan during this period, said the spokesman.

This is because infants and young children are more vulnerable to infectious diseases.

50 Flights Delayed, 9 Flights Diverted from Changi Airport After Fire-Related Evacuation At Control Tower

A fire alarm at the Changi Airport control tower went off in the early hours of Thursday morning (23 Jan), causing the tower to be evacuated.

As a result, 50 departure flights were delayed by 30 minutes or more and nine arriving flights were diverted.

Some flights were diverted to Hang Nadim International Airport in Batam and others to Kuala Lumpur International airport.

Emplyoment Rate For Singaporeans Rose Over The Last Decade

The employment rate of Singapore citizens has risen over the past decade, as well as the share of professionals, managers, executives, and technicians (PMETs) among working Singaporeans.

Compared with the total workforce, the median income of Singaporeans also grew faster, while citizen unemployment remained low.

Since Singapore citizens make up 85% of the workforce, this mirrors the trend for resident population.

PUB: New Weather Forecasting System Introduced To Combat Flash Floods

A new rainfall monitoring and prediction system has been developed to provide earlier rainfall warnings and pinpoint locations of potential flash floods to better handle such situations.

National water agency PUB said that this new system was implemented at the end of 2018, and has produced forecasts 30 minutes ahead of a rainfall event with 65 per cent accuracy.

The PUB first started developing the system in June 2016, working with the Hydroinformatics Institute and industrial electronics firm Furuno Singapore. It was completed in Dec 2018.

Scoot Cancels 8 Flights Between Singapore and Wuhan Due To Virus

Scoot Airlines has cancelled its flights between Singapore and the Chinese city of Wuhan from Thursday (Jan 23) to next Monday morning due to the spread of the Wuhan virus.

This comes after the temporary suspension of all public transport in the Chinese city due to the feared epidemic.

Flights from next Monday afternoon, however, are expected to operate as scheduled for now.
