1.4 million Singaporeans To Receive Bicentennial Bonus Benefits in November

On Thursday (Oct 24), the finance ministry announced that a total of 1.4 million Singaporeans will receive their Bicentennial Bonus benefits in November.

These benefits include GST vouchers, CPF top-ups, and Workfare bonuses for lower-income workers.

Singaporean adults aged 21 years and above with an income of up to S$28,000 for 2018, are eligible for the GST voucher cash payment.

Self-Driving Cars Will Soon Be Tested In The Entire Western Part of Singapore

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) announced on Thursday (Oct 24) that The entire western part of Singapore will become a testing ground for autonomous vehicles (AVs), or self-driving cars.

More than 1,000km of public roads will be opened up to the testing of such self-driving vehicles, including areas like Woodlands, Bukit Merah and Choa Chu Kang.

The current largest testing site for driverless cars, in Buona Vista, only has about 70km.

Devotee Falls Into Fire Pit At Sri Mariamman Temple While Fulfilling Vows

A devotee tripped and fell in the fire pit while fulfilling his vows at the Sri Mariamman Temple in Chinatown, said the Hindu Endowments Board (HEB) and the temple in a joint statement.

Rescuers managed to pull him out and he was rushed to Singapore General Hospital. He is currently in a stable condition.

Two rescuers also sustained injuries but are recovering well, according to the statement.

3 Indonesian Maids In Singapore Charged With Financing Terrorist Groups ISIS & JAD

Three Indonesian maids have been charged for collecting or providing money, or both, for the purpose of facilitating terrorist acts.

36-year-old Retno Hernayani, 33-year-old Anindia Afiyantari, and 31-year-old Turmini were investigated and detained by the Internal Security Department, said Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA)  in a press statement.

Investigations revealed that they were supporting the terrorist group Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (Isis) and the Indonesia-based Isis-affiliated group Jemaah Anshorut Daulah (JAD) financially.

Unemployment Rises To Highest Level In A Decade In Q3 2019

The overall unemployment in Singapore has risen in the third quarter of this year to the highest level since 2009, as more workers were retrenched.

The unemployment rate rose from 2.2 per cent in June to  2.3 per cent in September. Retrenchments also rose from 2,320 in the preceding quarter and 2,860 last year to 2,900.

However, employment growth shot up to the highest level since 2014.
