5 S’pore News That You Should Know About That Were Reported Yesterday (25 September 2019)

Let’s face it: in this social media world, exciting and viral news like a cat feeding a baby beer would often appear in your Facebook news feed, while important news like the GDP growth of Singapore this year wouldn’t get the same reach.

It’s understandable since social media platforms would prioritise engaging and viral contents to keep users in their platform.

In order to ensure that you’d still know about important news instead just social news, below are the top five Singapore news that was reported yesterday which you should know, simplified for you in a bite-sized format:

Singapore Population Has Grown to 5.7 Million

Think it’s crowded here in Singapore? Well, statistics have shown that you’re right.

Singapore’s population has grown by 1.2% to reach 5.7 million in June this year, and it’s not because we’re making more babies: it’s due to a boost in foreign workers. Last year, the total population was 5.64 million.

For just Singaporeans, our population grew from 3.47 million last year to 3.5 million.

ACG Looking into Potential Breaches of Gag Order for the Chin Swee Road Toddler’s Death

The Chin Swee Road 2YO death is a high-profile case: other than the remains of the body being found only after five years, it’s allegedly a murder by her own parents.

Due to the age of the toddler, a gag order was imposed to protect her identity. When that happened, no one is supposed to expose any personal details anywhere.

However, photos of the couple were posted on a Facebook Group, and it has since garnered over 4,500 Shares.

The AGC said yesterday that it takes “a serious view of any act that may constitute contempt or which breach the gag order”, and will “not hesitate to take appropriate action to protect the administration of justice.”

So, if you’ve seen the post, remember: don’t share it.

Number of Citizen Marriages in Singapore Lowest Since 2013

It seems like Singaporeans aren’t just making fewer babies; they’re not marrying too.

A citizen marriage is a marriage that involves at least one Singaporean. In 2018, there were only 23,632 citizen marriages, a drop from the 24,417 citizen marriages in 2017.

The goody news is that before 2013, between 2009 to 2013, the average citizen marriages per year is at 21.9K, which at least shows that more people are getting married since 2014.

One of our editors is getting married soon, so we here at Goody Feed also got contribute one okay.

Thumb Drive Inventor Charged with Cheating and Falsifying Account

Do you know that “thumb drive” is invented by a Singaporean, though it’s kind of “messy” because some other people also claimed to have invented it?

But still, we call it “thumb drive” although it’s technically a “flash drive”.

So, thumb drive inventor, Henn Tan, and three other people, were charged yesterday for falsification of entries including those pertaining to revenue and net profit in Trek 2000’s FY2015 financial statements, as well as recording fictitious sales and purchases respectively in 2013 and 2014.

In other words, cheating lah.

Trek 2000 founded by Henn and is a listed company. Henn stepped down last year as its CEO.

The cases will be mentioned on 6 November 2019.

Two Former SATS Employees Charged for Accepting Bribes

Anyone who’s been in Singapore long enough would know this: bribery doesn’t work in Singapore, so don’t even try it.

Guess two people didn’t get the memo.

The two men, both working in SATS then, accepted bribes of at least $196,825 and $3,000 respectively so that they’ll offer contracts to those contractors that had bribed them.

Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB) has this to say: “Singapore adopts a zero-tolerance approach towards corruption…It is a serious offence to accept or obtain bribes from another individual or entity.”

Yup, we all know that liao. Except that two jokers.
