As low as 50 Cents for legit food at the heart of Chinatown? Count me in!
For the 4th consecutive year in the running, this food fair has something for the curious, history buffs and foodies. And it’s coming back this July.
The theme for this year is *drumroll *: Hokkien Food!
It is said to be a ‘multi-sensory experience’ by including Neoclassical and Palladian influenced architecture and neon lights that were popular in amusement parks back then.
For the price of the food, you would expect the portion to be a little smaller. But don’t fret, that just means you have the opportunity to try even more food! You can even try things that you normally would not try but can now give it a chance because of the low price!
In this age of globalisation, it is easy to forget what our roots are and simply reduce it to Nasi Lemak, Chicken rice, Chilli crab and Cha Kueh Teow. However, this food fair will acquaint you with some dishes that are actually a part of our heritage.

What you can look out for
So if you are reading this and for some reason are still contemplating whether you should go down or not, here are some pictures to convince you.
Ngoh Hiang
Step aside Old Chang Kee, the 50 cents food fest is here to fill our tummies with goodies. The Ngoh Hiang is extra special as its chefs use a recipe that has been used for half a century! Now talk about some authentic Asian food.
For those who have not tried this before, this delicacy is made out of fried minced meat and shrimp that is coated with beancurd skin.
Sng Bao (Ice popsicles)
Nothing like a cool bag of sweet flavoured ice to refresh yourself. Chinatown can be high in density and cause you to feel like you need a break from all the people and heat. This would be the perfect dessert and refreshment.
You can also have fun figuring out how in the world are you going to open the bag and drink its contents without making a mess.
And More!
With over 40 stalls offering more than 50 sweets and delicacies, you can be sure that you’ll never go hungry there.
The event organisers promise that food there will start from 50 cents and never exceed 3 dollars.
Other than the first two food items mentioned, you can indulge in traditional Hokkien dishes like Hokkien-style rice, noodles, soups, snacks and drinks.
Payment
So you might be looking at the price of the food and thinking: “$0.50-$3, that sounds like a lot of coins, my wallet will be so heavy.”
Well, DBS offers a cashless option. Do download the Paylah! app before going down to have a fuss-free payment experience. Honestly, your life will be changed once you download this app.
All you have to do is to scan the QR code of the merchant and then type in the amount and hit the pay button. One thing to take note is that you will need a decent internet connection to carry this out!
