50YO Single Mother Left Homeless After Sending $124,000 To FB ‘Husband’ In Scam

Love is hard to come by.

Online dating is now a route many people take because it no longer has the stigma it used to.

But the thing with online dating is that you can never truly know who you’re talking to. You might think you’re chatting with the love of your life, but they may actually be a trickster after your money.

Broke & Homeless

That’s what happened to one woman in Malaysia who ended up broke and homeless after falling for an online love scam.

The victim, who wanted to be known only as Lee, said she met the man known as Kenneth Cheung through Facebook in October last year.

According to New Straits Times, Kenneth promised her gifts in the form of jewellery, watches, lingerie and handphones worth a total of RM800 million (S$261 million).

Wait, he promised her S$261 million? Even Bill Gates would have been like

As ludicrous as his promise was, the woman bought it.

But then, there was a ‘problem’.

Detained at customs

“I was then contacted by a man claiming to be a custom agent who said the items had been confiscated and Kenneth had been arrested by the Immigration Department,” said Lee.

Lee said the agent told her to make a series of payments in order to release the items and free Kenneth.

Now, it should be noted that Lee had never met Kenneth before and only communicated with him through video calls.

So, she made the payments but never received any of Kenneth’s gifts.

Police report

I hate to judge, but how could this woman not tell she was being duped? You see, when she made a police report after she failed to get the items, it was because she thought the “customs agent” had cheated her.

Oh, but it gets worse. Much worse.

In order to make all the payments to the ‘customs agent’ the woman sold her house in Masai for RM230,000 (S$75,000) and even borrowed from family members to make the payments.

Lee is now homeless and stays with her sister. She recently lodged another report at the Larkin police station over the matter.

Stulang assemblyman Andrew Chen Kah Eng feels sorry for her, with all the money she’s lost.

“I am deeply saddened by her situation as she has lost a significant amount of money. She is now penniless,” he said.

He also urged the public to be more careful when meeting strangers online, especially when they offer gifts.

“If you know your family members who might have fallen victim to these scams, help them to come forward and report to the authorities”.

Yes, it’s hard not to feel sorry for the poor woman. But according to World of Buzz, she still believes her ‘husband’ is real and loves her.

I really hope this woman snaps out of her infatuation and realizes what’s happening, because things may get even worse for her if she doesn’t.
