5YO Girl Got Electrocuted by Decorations in China Mall; Mother Intends to Sue the Mall

Let’s face it: over in Singapore, we’ve become so complacent that we’re pretty much certain that whatever we touch, nothing would electrocute us.

The only electric shock we’ve got is static electricity when we touch a doorknob or when our arms rub against someone.

If you still feel that way, then this video might just change your mind.

5YO Girl Caught on Video as She Was Electrocuted by Decorations in China Mall

I kid you not.

On 1 June 2019, a mother known as Shi has brought her daughter to Beijing Parkview Green shopping mall, an environmentally friendly mall.

Pretty cool, except for the fact that one of the metal poles are carrying electrical currents that could burn you.

On that fateful day, Shi’s daughter was minding her own business, walking and admiring the decorations in the mall. As she approached one of the metal poles and touched it, she suddenly held on to it and started convulsing.

Soon, she fell on the floor. All without a sound.

To be honest, on first look, it looks like she’s just playing a fool. Even her mother admitted to that, adding, “I initially thought that she was playing a fool when she was lying on the floor.”

But soon, she screamed and Shi’s mother knew something was wrong.

“After a few seconds, I realised she had been electrocuted.”

Taken to Hospital

After the incident, there was apparently a smell of rust in the air. The daughter’s lips had turned purple and her fingernails black.

Shi’s mother immediately brought her to a local hospital, and fortunately, there was no internal injuries, though there were some slight abnormalities in her daughter’s electrocardiogram.

Electrocardiogram is a test to check the heart by measuring the electrical activity of the heart. The girl could go home but would need to go back to the hospital if she felt anything unusual.

Of course we’re all wondering: Shi’s daughter touched a metal pole, not a switch or anything electrical-related. Why would she be electrocuted?

Missing a Grounding Wire

The mall issued a statement on 17 June 2019, claiming that the incident was due to the contractor’s negligence: the installation was missing a grounding wire.

Basically, we need grounding wire or cable in things that have electrical flow, like your car or in this case, the decorations. The grounding would ensure that any fault would send the electricity to the ground (and die off unless the ground’s made of metal) instead of…to a metal pole.

The mall has allegedly “dealt” with the contractor but it’s unknown what actions are taken.

Shi Not Happy

Shi requested for 30,000 yuan (SGD$5,900) as compensation and a copy of the electrical inspection report, but was declined. Following that, she’s going to take legal actions against the mall.

She added, “Is the report falsified or is the mall trying to mislead us and bury this safety risk? Not only do I want an explanation for my daughter, I want people to be more aware of incidents like this.”

Here’s the video of the girl getting electrocuted:
