The Food to Avoid After Eating Durian (Is Durian and Coffee Okay?)
If there’s one thing we Singaporeans know how to do it’s how to eat durian. But there any food to avoid after eating durian?
Durian – also known as the king of fruits – is a local favorite among many Singaporeans. It is prickly on the outside and soft on the inside; and it is a fruit that you either like or hate, with no middle ground in between.
How to eat durian
But durian lovers, before we rush ahead to gorge ourselves on this heavenly piece of fruit, take the time to read on the 6 things we are advised not to eat durian with!
Durian and Alcohol = No
Ok, people have been saying that eating durian and drinking alcohol at the same time will kill you. This simply not how to eat durian. While we are not able to confirm that fatality will occur, we do know that the high sulfur content of durians inhibits the enzyme that helps to break down alcohol in your body by up to 70%. So if you’re wasted, you’re going to stay wasted if you’ve consumed durian. And that, my friend, isn’t good.
Durian and Milk = No
It might sound tasty, but you know that this is not how to eat durian.
Well, first of all, I don’t know why anyone would want to have milk with durian, since durian itself is milky (and sweet) enough. Nevertheless, it has been said that drinking milk with durian can lead to increased blood pressure and in rare cases, fatal consequences.
Durian and Coffee (Or Any Drink with Caffeine)
Okay, firstly, I don’t know why you’ll have durian when you’re sleepy, but any drink loaded with caffeine and said to cause cardiac failure when consumed together with durians. But of course this isn’t confirmed with any study. Go get some sleep after having these kings of fruits, my friend.
Because this is not how to eat durian.
Egg Plant
Okay, your parents and doctor might have told you to have more fruits and vegetables, but not these two together. Both durians and egg plants are considered to be ‘heaty’ foods; if taken together, they will cause your body to heat up and fall ill.
Crabs
Again, this combination might make you wonder, but this is not how to eat durian.
Crabs are said to be extremely ‘cooling’ while durians belongs to the ‘heaty’ category; consuming both at the same time will cause your digestive system to be confused and may cause discomfort in your stomach.
Anyway, both of them are not cheap, so why not have them on different days?
Beef and Mutton
These meats are ‘heaty’ foods, and when consumed with durian, it may add on to the heatiness of your body and cause you to fall ill.
Ok, we have to admit that some – ok, most – of the items mentioned above are based more on old wives’ tales than scientific study but like the saying goes, better safe than not, right?
After all, it just sounds so comical when you tell your boss the next day this: “Sorry, I’ve got to take MC because I’ve had durian yesterday.”
So, there you have it. That’s how you eat durian.
