65YO Model Becomes Cover Girl of Harper’s Bazaar S’pore’s Apr Magazine

Meet 65-year-old Ong Bee Yan. Apart from being a grandmother of two, she’s also a sought-after model who recently graced April’s issue of Harper’s Bazaar Singapore.

No easy task even at the prime age of 25, let alone 65.

According to TODAYonlinethe former public relations executive, who has more than 2,000 followers on her Instagram account, was the cover girl of this month’s issue of Harper’s Bazaar Singapore magazine.

But she reportedly did not see it as a big deal, perhaps owing to her previous appearances for entities such as luxury fashion magazine L’Officiel Singapore, local womenswear label Store Unda, and American cosmetics brand IT Cosmetics.

In fact, it was not until friends and family members began congratulating her that she truly realised the extent of her achievement.

“I guess maybe I’m out of touch with what people perceive as success,” she said.

How It All Began

And to think that just two years ago, she was reportedly suffering from low self-esteem, and would regularly shy away from the camera.

According to various news reports, Mdm Ong “bloomed” when she decided to grow out her grey hair in 2019.

Cue numerous incoming compliments and some months later, and Mdm Ong was talent-scouted by a designer from Graye Studio.

“My image of a model is that she has to be tall, slim, drop-dead gorgeous. So, never in my wildest dreams, have I ever imagined myself to be a model,” she said.

But it did happen, and she embraced it.

Treating it as an opportunity to do something new, she leapt into it wholeheartedly. And despite being the oldest model at the session, she said that she enjoyed the whole experience.

Since then, modelling has become an everyday occurrence for Mdm Ong, whose exploits are posted on her Instagram account @grey_evolution

Very aptly named indeed.

Apparently, it’s her own way of inspiring other senior citizens to do something different.

To Date

At the current moment, Mdm Ong is said to be modelling on a part-time basis, with photo shoots almost every week.

She also runs a cold brew coffee start-up, which she had co-founded, and regularly spends time with her two grandchildren.

Being the fitness enthusiast, she would make sure to squeeze in strength and weight training twice a week as well.

And the best part? The whole family’s reportedly cheering her on.

“Definitely, my mom has more swag than me,” said her son Mr Chia Rong Liang, who works as a freelance film-making technician.

Perhaps it has always, simply, been her destiny.
