Hiking can be extremely dangerous. The climb can be too steep, your legs can fail you, and bad weather can strike at any moment.
Bad weather or a forest fire, that is.
7 Singaporean Hikers Rescued From Mount Raung In Indonesia After Forest Fires
Yesterday (5 October 2019), seven Singaporean hikers were rescued from Indonesia’s Mount Raung after they were trapped overnight by forest fires.
Yes, forest fires. These guys aren’t satisfied with hazing up several countries. They enjoy placing people’s lives at risk, too.
If you’ve never heard of or seen Mount Raung, it looks like this:
It’s located in the province of East Java and is one of the most active volcanoes on the island of Java. This makes it a popular hiking trail because climbers can view the active volcano when climbing the trail.
The seven Singaporeans were part of a team of 13 climbers which included two guides, two porters, and two Indonesian climbers, according to Indonesia’s National Search and Rescue Agency (BASARNAS).
On Friday evening, forest fires broke out in the area, making the paths inaccessible and trapping the hikers.
A joint search and rescue task force of 25 men was sent to rescue the group later that night.
Some sustained injuries
According to CNA, some of the hikers suffered mild burns and abrasions. The rescue personnel gave medical assistance to those injured before evacuating the entire group.
Further medical checks were also conducted after the evacuation was complete.
The seven Singaporeans have departed for Surabaya will return to Singapore this evening.
Now, no one could have foreseen these forest fires, but I personally would never hike on a volcano where lava could melt my insides at any time.
