Coffeeshop Suspended by SFA for 1 Day Due to Dirty Toilet

We all know that when it comes to toilet cleanliness, coffeeshops aren’t exactly role models.

But did you know that they are supposed to keep the toilets clean? And that they could be punished for not keeping clean toilets?

Well, as they said, TIL.

Coffeeshop Suspended by SFA for 1 Day Due to Dirty Toilet

According to a news release by the Singapore Food Authority (SFA), the coffeeshop in question is the 7 Stars Food Shop (Eating House) located at 85 Dawson Road, #01-02, Singapore 141085.

They have suspended the operator’s license for one day (24 Sep 2021).

The reason? 7 Stars had failed to keep its toilets clean three times; under the demerit point system, the offence costs the operator 4 points, and once the total demerit points reach 12 within a single year, penalties such as a 1-day, 2-day or 3-day suspension can be dished out.

7 Stars was also fined S$1,300 for their offences.

Feedback

In the same news release, SFA stated that they take a serious view of such offences and will not hesitate to take action if needed.

Diners are also encouraged not to tolerate such issues.

Should they observe something similar happening at other places, they should not patronise the business.

Instead, they should go elsewhere for their meals, but not before giving SFA feedback via their online form, which can be found here.

Alternatively, you can reach SFA via the SFA contact centre at 6805 2871. Details for a follow-up investigation will be required.

Keeping Toilets Clean

Given the COVID-19 situation, the government wants to encourage better hygiene practices; this includes washing your hands with soap the proper way as much as possible.

And with public toilets in such poor conditions, people might be discouraged from doing the necessary because, well, who wants to go into a smelly toilet, right?

Recently, it was also made known that the Bukit Merah View COVID-19 cluster could’ve been caused by long queues for food and the toilet surfaces.

You can read more about it here; just keep in mind that “fomite transmission” simply means people touching infected surfaces, then getting infected themselves.

On a completely unrelated note, did you know that if your favourite coffeeshop wants to upgrade its toilet, they can get a massive discount if they just take away the smoking corner? You can read more about that here.
