7-Year-Old Girl Passes Away After A Van Hits Her in Sengkang Condo
On Thursday (15 August), a seven-year-old girl got ready for school and headed down to the parking lot in front of Block 23 of The Topiary, an executive condominium at 23 Fernvale Lane to wait for her school bus.
While she was waiting for her school bus, a tragic accident happened. The 7-year-old girl, who was presumably a primary school student, was hit by a van. The van was another one of the school buses queuing to pick up students in the area.
The accident occurred at around 6:20 am — long before most of us were even awake. The seven-year-old girl was unconscious when taken to Sengkang General Hospital. She subsequently passed away at the hospital.
According to the victim’s older brother, multiple vans usually drive into the area around the same time in the morning to pick up students. The school bus which the seven-year-old was supposed to take was the one right behind the van that caused the accident.
The victim’s older brother also shared that the driver of the van that caused the accident was looking at the left side mirror of the van, and did not notice the seven-year-old girl standing in front until the collision had occurred.
The 67-year-old male van driver has also been arrested for careless driving causing death. Investigations are currently ongoing.
Fatal Traffic Accidents on the Rise
Traffic accidents appear to be on the rise — in 2023 alone, there were 136 fatal traffic accidents, the highest figure since 2016, when there were 141 deaths.
While it’s unclear how many fatal traffic accidents have occurred in 2024 thus far, a quick glimpse at various news reports show that the outlook appears rather bleak.
Just two months ago, we saw a 19-year-old girl pass after she was hit by a vehicle on Joo Chiat Road. The 19-year-old girl had just graduated from Raffles Institution one year earlier and was set to begin her university education at Singapore Management University (SMU)’s Yong Pung How School of Law.

Of course, two months ago, we also saw the fatal River Valley accident, which claimed the life of a four-year-old girl. The four-year-old was hit by a car while crossing the road with her helper and younger sister.

With fatal traffic accidents on the rise, it’s all the more important for road users to ensure safety on the roads. Regardless of whether you’re a driver or a pedestrian, do stay alert while you’re on the roads — stop accidents before they stop you.
