Elderly Security Guard Brutally Assaulted by Condo Occupant
In a Facebook post by the Union of Security Employees (USE) posted earlier today, the USE revealed that one of their security officers, the 74-year-old man, was the victim of an “egregious” assault situation.
The USE is affiliated with the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC), and it represents “all persons who are employed in a bargainable capacity in the security and security-related services (such as private investigation, enforcement and screening, etc)”.
Individuals who are part of the NTUC-USE Union Membership receive assistance in the four areas of protection, progression, placement and privileges.
According to the USE, the elderly security officer had witnessed an altercation between a male Chinese resident and a taxi driver outside of the guardhouse in the early hours of 14 April 2023.
What followed subsequently was the male Chinese resident aggressively approaching the victim and eventually assaulting the victim repeatedly.
The victim was left injured and bleeding. An image attached to the USE’s Facebook post showed a white piece of gauze and medical tape covering what appears to be a red, raw and bloody wound on the back of a head.
The victim was, thankfully, conscious and managed to call the police after the incident.

The USE then assisted the elderly man with making a police report. The man is currently on medical leave and recovering from his injuries. His company is generously sponsoring his medical expenses.

Security Officers Are Under Threat of Assault
It appears that security officers may frequently find themselves subject to physical violence.
According to the USE, in April alone, there have been three cases of abuse to which USE has attended to. If some cases were left unreported, imagine how many security officer victims there could be.
We think this is unacceptable.
As the USE puts it succinctly, “[no] one goes to work expecting to be assaulted”. Indeed, it is not unreasonable to treat those who are “merely doing their jobs” or “performing duties given to them” with respect and kindness.

Those who assault others and are found liable for causing hurt to others may be fined and/or imprisoned, depending on the severity of the assault. For instance, an offender who is charged under the Penal Code for assaulting others or using criminal force against someone else faces up to S$1,500 in fines and up to three months of jail time.
The penalties look set to increase in a bid to protect the public and security officers. For the same offence of assault or using criminal force, the new penalties in Singapore could be fines of up to $7,500 and imprisonment of up to two years.
It is clear that legislators are sending a strong signal that assault will not be tolerated in Singapore.
