Most teenagers nowadays make use of their wonderful photography and videography skills to make TikTok videos or open a photography account on Instagram and shoot to fame.
However, this one teenager had vastly different ideas of what he should record with the freedom of artistry that his mobile phone offered to him.
And needless to say, it was far from appropriate or legal.
16-Year-Old Boy Found To Take Many Upskirt Photos
On 3 August, a 16-year-old boy pleaded guilty to three charges of voyeurism and possession of obscene videos following the discovery that he had taken multiple upskirt photos of young girls since 2019.
Other charges including an insult to modesty after he asked one of the girls to undress and expose herself will also be taken into consideration.
The boy and his victims are unable to be named due to protection orders.
It was reported that the boy had taken photos and videos of girls wearing school uniforms across 77 instances in the last three years after camping out at MRT stations and bus stops islandwide.
Apparently, he had a type – he was attracted to slender girls in school uniforms, some of his victims as young as primary school students.
Whenever he saw someone he liked, he would record an upskirt video of them with two of his mobile phones, which he then stored in a password-encrypted folder for his own… viewing.
Didn’t Stop Even After Phones Were Confiscated
The boy’s deeds came to light after a mother of a 12-year-old girl made a police report, accusing him of trying to touch the girl’s butt.
Both his mobile phones were confiscated by the police at that time as part of their investigations, and they found a multitude of videos in there.
Yet, instead of stopping, the boy’s audacity led him to procure two more mobile devices in order to film more upskirt videos.
His tyranny continued until 1 September last year, when he tried to secretly record a video of a 12-year-old girl in the lift.
She turned around and caught him in the act with his mobile phone below her skirt, and reported the matter to the police the next day.
On 14 April this year, they confiscated his two other mobile devices as well. One of the mobile devices contained 39 videos, most of the victims were in school uniform.
Was Not Assessed To Have Mental Illness
Like some cases of voyeurism, the offender may have a voyeuristic disorder, where they feel sexually attracted to unsuspecting victims who may be naked, or simply what you can see from upskirt videos.
However, the psychiatric assessment from the Institute of Mental Health with regards to the boy showed that he did not have any mental illnesses, nor did his behaviour fulfil the criteria to be diagnosed with a voyeuristic disorder.
He was simply said to have had a “sexual arousal from obtaining upskirt videos of unsuspecting, non-consenting persons.”
Next, he will also be assessed for his suitability to be on probation, and the case will be heard again on 9 September.
Those found guilty of voyeurism of victims under 14 years old can face up to two years of jail, a fine, or caning.
