78-Year-Old Driver Runs Red Light Near Taipei School, Killing 3 and Injuring 12

On 19 May 2025, a car driven by a 78-year-old man plowed into motorcyclists and pedestrians near a school in Taipei, Taiwan, killing three and injuring 12 others.

Fatal Collision Outside Taipei School Claims Three Lives

The accident occurred around 4pm when the elderly driver ran a red light at an intersection near Taipei.

The vehicle collided with three motorcycles and a bicycle before hitting a group of mostly students.

After the initial impact, the car continued approximately 140 metres down the street before crashing into a road divider.

Police stated in a release that “for unknown reasons, the vehicle accelerated suddenly.”

Videos shared by police show people performing chest compressions on victims lying on the street, emergency personnel carrying away the injured, as well as overturned motorcycles and bicycles.

Papers and debris were scattered across the intersection following the crash.

School Students Among Victims in Deadly Taiwan Traffic Accident

Three people died from injuries sustained in the crash, including two 12-year-old female students and a 40-year-old woman.

All victims were rushed to three different hospitals with injuries of “varying severity,” according to police.

Among the 12 injured survivors, nine were students aged 12 to 15 from Sanxia Junior High School.

The youngest victim, aged six, was from a nearby kindergarten.

The driver was left unconscious from crash injuries following the incident.

Police confirmed he had a valid license and tested negative for alcohol, but his condition has prevented further questioning.

Taiwan President Orders Task Force to Investigate Deadly Crash

Taiwan President Lai Ching-te visited victims in the hospital on Monday night after the incident.

The Presidential Office released a statement saying the president was “shocked and saddened” by the accident.

Lai has ordered a special task force to be established to help victims and their families while investigating the cause of the crash.

New Taipei City Mayor Hou Yu-ih also visited the hospitals where victims were being treated.

“Some of the victims are still receiving intensive treatment,” Hou said.

“We will clarify the responsibility as soon as possible and give the public an explanation.”

Police investigations into the cause of the crash are currently ongoing.
