You can either love it or detest it. It can smell enticing to one, and vomit-worthy to another. Whatever it is, this thorny fruit is the King of Fruits in Asia, and we’ve come to accept and love it.
The durian season is coming pretty soon, and I’m all star (or should I say thorn) struck. JB and Singapore are home to some of the best varieties and sellers. Which is exactly why you should not miss out these places for your durian gobbles.
Uncle Lim Durian Farm, Pekan Nenas, Johor
Ask any local durian expert for a place to go, and they’d tell you to drive over to this farm. The place itself is really easy to find with a GPS (duh). They’re well known for their kampong durian. It could cost you as much as RM23 per kilo, and probably more so now. The farm is open every day and it closes at 4pm.
A Stall along the Pontian Road Heading towards Uncle Lim’s, Pontian, Johor
This stall wasn’t as crowded as the farm for obvious reasons. The price for kampong durians was slashed by half and tasted better too. The owner is a humble guy and doesn’t really have much marketing skills. He goes by the nickname “Botak”. This no-name stall is a small business that’s really worth visiting. It’s open every day.
Stall Opposite San Low Seafood Restaurant, Taman Pelangi, Johor
Try the durian 88 variety here, and dig into its thick, sensuous flesh in each bite. The owner goes by the name Durian Kui.
Kota Tinggi Fruit Farm, Jalan Lombong, Kota Tinggi, Johor
Arrange a fruit farm tour and end it with durian for a tea time snack. You could even book yourself a seat at their durian buffet. It’s a bit of a drive from JB Central, though. A good one hour without traffic.
Desaru Fruit Farm, Sungai Cemaran, Kota Tinggi, Johor
There’s a really good fruit guide here, and you also get to check out the mini zoo in its vicinity. You can even sample and purchase honey here. And the durians are exquisite! They operate from 8.30am to 6.30pm daily.
Agrobazaar Malaysia, Sultan Gate, Singapore
There’s a special cold room for the durian king here. The temperature’s set at 12 degrees Celsius which helps the durians keep for longer. Not that it’s actually required, judging by the way durians are cracked open and feasted upon here.

Combat Durian, Balestier Road, Singapore
This is one of the oldest durian shops in the block. Their King of Kings is on the same level as a slice of wagyu steak. Go figure, or bite.
249 Balestier Rd, 329714
Wan Li Xiang, Dempsey Road Carpark, Singapore
The kampong durians brought in by the owner, Ah Di, are boated in from Pulau Ubin. Ask him for a bitter/sweet variety, and he’ll get the right selection for you.
