8 Facts About Harry & Meghan’s Wedding, The Wedding Everyone is Talking About

If you haven’t heard, the greatest wedding of the year happened on 19 May.

And no, it’s not about Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez.

Prince Harry and Meghan Merkle, a former American actress, tied the knot at St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Palace.

Here are eight facts about the royal wedding everyone is talking about.

1. Following in Princess Diana’s Footsteps

When Princess Diana married Prince Charles in 1981, she omitted the word “obey” in her wedding vows.

Kate Middleton did the same thing when she married Prince William in 2011.

And now, we have another one, Meghan, following in Princess Diana’s footsteps.

She and Harry read traditional vows from the Book of Common Prayer but omitted the word “obey” as well.

Hmm. People in the office are thinking of committing that as well #justsaying

2. First Time A Royal Bride Walked Down The Aisle Alone

Reports before the wedding spoke about how the day will be full of unconventional surprises.

And one thing that Meghan Markle did during the wedding, that no other royal bride ever did, is to begin her walk down the aisle alone.

She had initially wanted her father to walk her down the aisle but he was unable to make it due to a recent heart surgery.

So she walked down the aisle of the chapel nave without an escort.

Prince Charles walked her to the altar but stepped back instead of giving her away to Prince Harry.

It was said that Meghan planned this procession herself.

3. Finally a Duke & Duchess of Sussex After 175 Years

Queen Elizabeth II announced that Harry is now His Royal Highness the Duke of Sussex a few hours before the wedding.

This makes Meghan Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Sussex.

After hearing the news, Tim Loughton, Tory MP for East Worthing and Shoreham, said that after a gap of 175 years, Sussex once again has a Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

4. Big Stars Attended The Wedding Ceremony

How do you know when a V.V.V.I.P wedding is in progress?

As well as Oprah Winfrey, Priyanka Chopra, Sarah Rafferty, Gina Torres, Patrick J. Adams, and Gabriel Macht.

The event is also estimated to be watched by 1.9 billion people worldwide, according to BBC.

It was also reported that over 29 million people watched the royal wedding on television when it was broadcasted.

5. Harry’s Exes Attended The Wedding & The Bride Didn’t Mind

Let me ask you. If it was your wedding, would you dare to invite your exes?

And even if you did, will they appear?

Apparently, Prince Harry did. And even better, Cressida Bonas and Chelsy Davy were more than happy to turn up.

What’s even more interesting is that an inside source told US Magazine that the bride, Meghan Markle didn’t really mind.

It was also reported that Chelsy Davy still keeps in contact with Prince Harry and remain friends even after breaking up.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

6. Meghan’s Wedding Veil Has A Secret Meaning

If you were watching the wedding on the internet, you’ll be thinking, “Wow, what a long veil.”

But there’s actually a hidden meaning to the veil.

Prince Harry was recently appointed as the Commonwealth Youth Ambassador. Because of that, Meghan reportedly wanted all 53 countries of the Commonwealth to walk down the aisle with her.

The view has flora designs from every single commonwealth country. Each unique flower was researched carefully, then embroidered by hand.

It took hundreds of hours and each worker has to wash their hands every half an hour to keep the silk in pristine conditions.

7. Her Bouquet of Flowers Has a Special Meaning As Well

If even a veil has such a deep meaning, you’d know that the bouquet would have a huge amount of thought put into it as well.

Other than handpicked flowers by royalty (which in this case, is her husband, Prince Harry), the bouquet also contained “Forget-Me-Nots”, the favourite flowers of Princess Diana.

It was reported that this is intentional and meant to honour Princess Diana’s memory on the couple’s wedding day.

8. The Cost Of The Royal Wedding

Okay, the entire thing sounds so damn grand, right?

Can you guess the price tag? I asked my colleague in the office and he said, “1 million.”

What do you think is the price tag?

If you’re guessing within the vicinity of 1 to 10 million, you’re not even close.

It’s a whopping $45 million.

Yup, $45 million (about SGD$58 million).

Of course, a huge bulk of it, about $40 million, is spent on security measures for the big day.

Snipers, undercover police, UAV-defense and even a “drone-destroyer” was deployed for the big day.

It is expected that taxpayers’ money will be used to foot the bill for the security aspect of the royal wedding.

The palace will pay for the core aspects of the wedding like “the core aspects of the wedding, such as the church service, the associated music, flowers, decorations, and the reception afterwards.”

Bride Meghan Markle is highly likely to pay for her own wedding dress, which is estimated to go up to six-figures.
