You see Cheers and its yellow smiley logo everywhere nowadays, be it at the petrol station or in MRT stations. Cheers is possibly 7-Eleven’s most prominent competitor. Cheers is where we get all the stuff we need on the go, from cold drinks to beat the sweltering hot weather to even SIM cards. However, do you know the facts and history behind this home-grown brand?

It is started in 1998.
It’s 18 years old this year–maybe even older than some of you GoodyFeed readers!

It is owned by NTUC Fairprice.
Cheers was a 24hr initiative started in order to cater to the younger generation who are always looking for speed and convenience.

Guess where its first three outlets were located?
Their first outlets were at Nanyang Polytechnic, NTUC Pasir Ris Resort and in Bukit Batok housing estate. To date, these outlets are still surviving!

Guess the MRT stations where Cheers opened its first three outlets?
They were at Ang Mo Kio, Admiralty and Tampines. Did you guess them right?

It has more than 120 outlets.
Although it’s a far cry from 7-Eleven’s 560 stores all over the island, we are still proud of this home-grown chain’s achievements!

They are still better than 7-Eleven.
Cheers won the Franchisor of the Year award at the Franchising and Licensing Association (FLA) award ceremony in 2015. Many business owners prefer licensing Cheers over 7-Eleven, reportedly because of the lower licensing fees!

Cheers was the leading corporate supporter of 2010 Youth Olympics.
If you remember, back in 2008, Cheers even had a huge rally in Orchard Road that had the entire stretch coloured in yellow.

Cheers has an agreement with Exxonmobil.
If you haven’t realised yet, all Esso petrol stations only have either FairPrice Xpress or Cheers outlets. This is part of an agreement between NTUC and Exxonmobil!
