Approximately 14% of Singaporeโs population are smokers, which means there are about 770,000 smokers in our tiny island.
Thatโs a lot.
And if you happen to be one of the 770,000, youโd definitely have experienced something called the Smokerโs Cough.
That damn cough that never goes away together with the mucus that seems to be permanently stuck in your throat.
Just clear your throat now. Do you feel something sticky in your throat?
Itโs irritating AF.
Here are 8 natural remedies for that irritating Smokerโs Cough all smokers need to know.
1. Drink 6-8 glasses of water every day
One simple but effective way of keeping the Smokerโs Cough manageable is to drink 6-8 glasses of water every day. The water will help to keep the mucus in your lungs and throat thin, so you donโt feel like coughing it up all the time.
2. Exercise 30 minutes daily
Canโt find enough reason to exercise besides losing weight? Hereโs one more for you!
Exercising helps to loosen up your mucus and makes it easier for you to cough up phlegm. With less irritant, youโll cough lesser.
As a bonus, youโll be a happier person as well!
3. Avoid coffee and alcohol
This is something most smokers will not like. After all, thereโs nothing better to get you ready for work than the 2Csโcoffee and cigarettes.
And really, the best time to smoke is when you chill with your friends over drinks.
But stay away from them anyway because theyโll dehydrate your body and cause you to feel irritation.
4. Drink green tea
Or any drink thatโs high in antioxidant, actually. These drinks help to relax your body, which will, in turn, reduce the coughs.
5. Add Honey to everything you drink
Honey will apply a coat on your throat and help reduce irritation during the day. Simply eat a teaspoon of honey or add it to your drinks and youโll feel better almost immediately!
6. Sleep with head higher than body
The morning is the worst time for Smokerโs Cough. It makes you feel like youโre coughing up a lung and starts your day off on a bad note.
Just prop your head on a few pillows when you sleep to minimise mucus in your throat so youโll feel more like a healthy human being when you wake up.
7. Place a humidifier in your room
A research has shown that chemicals in eucalyptus oils can help soothe your smokers cough.
Simply get a humidifier and Vicks in your room and youโll be able to breathe better.
8. Just quit smoking
And last but not least, just quit smoking.
Itโs expensive and you might just quit smoking after hearing this: Smokerโs Cough is caused by the failure of the cilia (hair-like structures within the lungs that help get rid of toxins) to work.
Smoking paralyses them and stops them from performing their function.
So with no other way, your body is forced to try and expel the toxin through the respiratory system, via coughing.
You are stopping an essential body function with your smoking habit. If that doesnโt stop you, nothing will.
But hereโs the good news: The cilia regain their function after you stop smoking for a few hours.
A Smokerโs Cough is an irritation, but if you find yourself having these symptoms, it might be a sign of more serious damage to your lungs:
- Coughing up blood
- Frequently losing your voice
- Wheezing
It might be best to consult a doctor, just to be safe, you know.
