Many of us are always reminiscing about “the good old days” and how life was simpler and fulfilling then. However, would you really be happy if you were living like people did in the 1990s? Our needs and wants have changed, and that’s only normal as humans advance through the ages. If you are stuck in the 90s with a 21st century mindset, then you are going to be in for some problems.
Air-conditioning.
The only thing that hasn’t changed about Singapore is probably its climate. Can you imagine living in the heat with no air-conditioning?
EZ-link system.
The ticketing system was really slow in the past, when you had to put in your ticket and take it out after that. With the EZ-link, you just have to tap and go (and run for the MRT).
Shelter is everywhere.
Buildings have popped up everywhere, so you are bound to find shelter from the sudden rainstorms within a 100m radius. You don’t have to run for a mile and get soaking wet.
Playgrounds are safer.
With the emphasis placed on child safety and welfare nowadays, our playgrounds have ergonomic equipment, cushioned floors and more. Furthermore, they are also more hygienic than the sand playgrounds.
Shopping outlets are accessible everywhere.
Big streetwear names such as H&M and Uniqlo are now not just found in Orchard Road, but in many heartland malls. Now, you don’t have to go to town just to find shops that are not Popular or Giordano.
Computers and internet connections are much faster.
Don’t even remind us of the 56kbp dial-up connection. Also, even a 10-second wait for the computer to boot up is considered quite long now, so we don’t even need to think about the 5minutes wait for Windows 95.
Transport infrastructure is much better.
In the past, we only had the EW and NS lines. Places like Serangoon or Punggol were almost unheard of. Now, we have MRT lines crisscrossing all over the island!
More stable jobs.
In the 1990s, jobs required mostly more manual-related skills that almost anyone could do. Now, we are less easily replaceable due to the majority of jobs being more skill-based and competency-based.
Over in TikTok, there’s a drama involving property agents that’s caused by us. Here’s what happened:
