On 7 April, a Facebook user shared a tragic post detailing the death of her father.
According to the user, her 81-year-old father had cycled to the polyclinic to receive his first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine at around 8.30am on 6 April.
He then returned home and had his meal.
Later that day, at about 9pm, the man started experiencing difficulty breathing, cold sweats, and turned pale, so the family called the ambulance.
After an hour or so at the A&E, the doctor informed the family that the man had passed away due to a heart attack, and that he was unable to be revived.
Some news outlets and Facebook users started pointing the finger at the COVID-19 vaccine, saying it had directly caused the 81-year-old’s death.
But we now know that that’s simply not true.
MOH Clarified That 81-YO Man Who Died After Getting COVID-19 Vaccine Wasn’t Due to Vaccine Complications
Instead, the cause of the 81-year-old man’s death was ischaemic heart disease, and not COVID-19 vaccination complications, the Ministry of Health (MOH) confirmed on Thursday (15 Apr).
The Health Sciences Authority’s (HSA) Forensic Medicine Division concluded that there was “no evidence of acute anaphylaxis or an allergic reaction at the injection site of the COVID-19 vaccine” post-mortem.
What they found instead was an “extensive narrowing” of the three main blood vessels supplying blood to the muscles of the man’s heart.
This was caused by atherosclerosis, a disease in which plaque builds up inside your arteries, hardening and narrowing arteries over time which obstructs blood flow.
This led to ischaemic heart disease, which occurs when there’s inadequate blood flow to the heart muscles.
POFMA Issued to Singapore Uncensored & Goh Meng Seng
As Albert Einstein once said, you can’t believe everything you read online. And that’s especially true during the pandemic, when paranoia is just as contagious as the coronavirus.
In its media release, MOH added that it’s aware of falsehoods circulating online alleging “clear and causal links” between COVID-19 vaccination and strokes and heart attacks.
Correction directions under the Protection from Online Falsehoods and Manipulation Act (POFMA) were issued to Singapore Uncensored, which published an article containing the Facebook user’s post.
They were also issued to the People’s Power Party’s Goh Meng Seng, who reportedly claimed that the vaccination caused or substantially contributed to the 81-year-old’s death.
“These allegations are false. As of Apr 14, there is no credible evidence for an increased risk of heart attack or stroke with the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines which are currently approved and offered in Singapore,” the ministry added.
There’s no rational reason to fear taking either COVID-19 vaccine in use here, as they’ve been assessed to be “safe and efficacious” by both the HSA and Expert Committee on COVID-19 vaccination.
What’s more, medical teams are well-equipped and measures are in place at all vaccination sites to ensure the safety of vaccine recipients before, during, and after vaccination.
So, if you’re invited to take a vaccine and have no history of severe allergic reactions, throw your worries out the window and get the jab to protect your loved ones.
