No matter the scale of it, crimes are still crimes.
And in Singapore, it’s pretty difficult to run or hide considering how small our little red dot is.
And recently, a large number of people have been arrested for vice-related activities.
83 Women & 1 Man Arrested in Jurong East, Orchard, Tanjong Pagar and Woodlands for Vice Related Activities
The Straits Times reported that Police have nabbed 83 women and a man for the aforementioned activities.
This comes after a month-long operation which ended on 31 March this year.
They were rounded up at condominiums, hotels and residential units in areas.
This included Jurong East, Orchard Road, Tanjong Pagar and Woodlands, with suspects ranging between 26 to 54 years old.
All were arrested for offences under the Women’s Charter.
Those acting as agents or pimps for vice activities can face up to seven years of jail and a S$100,000 fine.
Property Owners To Be Vigilant
But besides the perpetrator or participants of such activities, property owners should be alert as well.
The police mentioned property owners are responsible to make sure these activities don’t happen.
They should be diligent in looking out for suspicious or dubious tenants.
This can be done by personally inspecting the prospective tenant’s documents of identity or having a face-to-face interview with the tenant.
And if you know such activities happen and don’t take action, you can also be in trouble.
Property owners who knowingly allow their premises to be used for vice-related activities face up to five years of jail, up to S$100,000 of fines or both, if convicted under the Women’s Charter.
The police had the following to say regarding HDBs view on such cases.
“HDB takes a serious view of flat owners and tenants who violate such conditions, particularly if the flat is misused for vice activities, and will not hesitate to take the appropriate action against them.”
Prior to this case, the police previously conducted another anti-vice operation last year that lasted 38 days.
The operation ended on 17 Sept 2020, with 62 women, aged between 21 and 51 being arrested.
SG Nasi Lemak
But when you think of illegal sex work in Singapore, one name comes to mind immediately.
The now-defunct ‘SG Nasi Lemak’ Telegram group.
Operating like a “red light district” of Telegram, the chat group with over 44,000 members shared pornographic and lewd images of unsuspecting women, sold vape devices and juices, sexual services, and sexual enhancement drugs.
However, of the many admins of the group, 39-year-old Liong Tianwei was sentenced to a 9-week jail term and a S$26,000 fine.
In total, Mr Liong pleaded guilty to six charges including possession and transmission of obscene material.
