87 Households in Toa Payoh Affected by 2-Hour Power Outage; Cause of Failure Still Under Investigation

Yesterday’s (29 Mar) pouring rain did more than simply soak hapless pedestrians through their jeans.

(Yes, I’m speaking from personal experience. Curse the rain.)

It may also have caused a power outage for many households in Toa Payoh

Here’s what happened.

87 Households in Toa Payoh Affected by 2-Hour Power Outage; Cause of Failure Still Under Investigation

According to a spokesman for Bishan-Toa Payoh Town Council, the town council came to know of the power outage at 2:28pm.

The power outage lasted for nearly two hours and affected all units at Block 48 Toa Payoh Lorong 5.

At around 4:15pm, the power fault was resolved. According to the spokesman, the cause of the power outage is currently being investigated.

Mrs Lim, one of the residents affected by the power outage, was working at home at the time of the power outage. Her Wi-Fi connection was cut off, which posed a great inconvenience to her.

The human resources manager who is in her 30s said that she had to finish her work before 6:00pm so that she could pick her children up, hence the power outage was “very disruptive” to her.

The lifts also stopped working as a result of the power failure.

According to Mrs Lim, the lifts started working again about half an hour into the power outage, but electricity remained cut off.

She lamented that the lack of electricity had “likely affected the ice-cream and breast milk that [she had] stored in the fridge”.

To make matters worse, she was unable to reach the Bishan-Toa Payoh Town Council even after calling them six times.

In response to this, the spokesman for the town council said, “We are unsure why the resident could not reach us at our hotline.”

She also added that when telephone lines are engaged, faults can still be reported through the 24-hour Essential Maintenance Service Unit at 1800-2417711.

What To Do in the Event of a Power Outage

Most of us are lucky enough to have never experienced a power failure before.

But what should we do in the event of a power outage?

According to ElectricianSingapore, here are a few things to take note of in the event of a power outage:

  • Use flashlights instead of candles (although candles may seem more romantic, they’re also more risky)
  • Turn off/unplug electronic appliances that had been turned on before the outage
  • Check the breaker switch system to see if it has been flipped
  • Make sure that fridge and freezer doors are shut
