From 18 August to 20 August, an 8-year-old Taiwanese boy by the name of Tzuo Ze Gang hiked up Jade Mountain which is known to be the highest mountain in Taiwan.
This mountain is 3,952 metres above sea level and is thus the fourth-highest maximum elevation of any island in the world.
You might be wondering, what’s this little guy doing climbing such a high mountain?
Get ready for the reason, because you’re about to shed buckets of tears.
A Promise To Late Mom
According to the boy’s father, Mr Tzuo recalled that when his son was just 4 years old, his wife had told him a story about the Jade Mountain. Following this, they made a promise to climb it together.
However, a year later, she had to undergo surgery on her leg and was thus unable to climb it together with her son.
As a way of making up for it, she told her son to climb it with a few of her belongings. That way, it would be like she was with him when he went out to see the world.
Sadly, she passed away last year. The little boy mourned her death but he never once forgot his promise with her, instead, he cherished it even more.
His father encouraged him by telling him, “Yu Shan is the highest point in Taiwan. I’m sure we’ll be closer to mummy there.”
Hiking To The Top Of The World
With that, the father-and-son duo set out to prepare for the hike along with two close family friends.
Throughout the entire trek, the boy suffered from altitude sickness, causing him to feel nauseated, breathless and dizzy every once in a while.
However, with his mother in his heart and a picture of her in his backpack, he managed to conquer Jade Mountain.
When he reached the top, he quickly removed his mother’s portrait from his backpack and shouted with all his might: “Mummy, we reached the top! I carried you to the top of Jade Mountain!”
After 591 days since she passed, little Tzuo Ze Gang can proudly proclaim that he has fulfilled his promise to his mother. She may be gone now, but she continues to live on in his heart.
