There are ways to liven up your date, and the best thing is that it’s entirely free.

So kick back, relax while we bring you 9 hidden spots in Singapore that are totally entry-free, and utterly perfect for dates.

1. Henderson Waves

Although Henderson Waves might be but a single picturesque stop along the Southern Ridges, it’s also arguably the highlight of the entire trail.

Mimicking the undulating shape of waves, this bridge is perfect for slow walks when you’re on a tight shoestring budget.

Take caution though; seeing how Singapore, to put it in Horoscope terms, has been thrown under the sun in the 13th corridor, you’ll be ill-advised to visit the bridge during the afternoon. Instead, opt for an early morning or late afternoon walk if you’re going during the day.

At night, the bridge lights up, making for a lovely, free evening walk.

Henderson Waves lights up between 7 pm and 7 am daily.

2. Little Guilin

Having come here for a previous shoot, I can personally attest that this is a pretty romantic getaway. If you can get past the stifling heat, blood-thirsty mosquitoes and awkward climbs, that is.

But hey, if you can get past all that, it’s a pretty scenic view.

I doubt you will want to stay for long though, but hey the key thing’s that it’s quiet. And free. 

Incidentally, it’s also, according to my boss, a pretty ideal place for a romantic proposal.

But if you’ve watched the video you will know that it’s not really proposal-worthy.

3. Changi Point Coastal Walk

If you find your eyelids fluttering non-stop at the word ‘Changi’, worry not, for it’s perfectly supernatural-safe.

Probably.

Anyway, enjoy enrapturing views of the coastline on this walk, as well as interesting local flora and fauna. There is also a load of opportunities for the both of you to soak in your Instagram-star personas!

And the best part? The walk starts near Changi Village, so you can have some great food before setting off on your adventure! (But of course, the food ain’t free)

The walk has six sections going from East to West: Creek Walk, Beach Walk, Sailing Point Walk, Cliff Walk, Kelong Walk and Sunset Walk. Our advice? Turn up a little past 5, and finish your walk when the sun’s just about to set.

Trust me; there’s nothing quite like it.

The Changi Boardwalk is open to the public 24 hours.

4. ION SKY

Found on the 56th floor of ION Orchard, this place grants you no less than a 360-degree view of Singapore from above. And according to Shopback, the view’s utterly breath-taking, and we can’t help but agree with them.

Having seen the buildings from down up for the majority of our lives, it just feels weird to see them from up down. And yet it also feels oddly calm. Not least because you have your lovely date partner alongside you, of course.

How do I describe it? It’s like a picturesque expression of the term, “Together, you can fight through anything.”

Classic.

And of course, the quotes will get your philosophical sides all riled up too.

5. Esplanade Roof Garden

Yes, Esplanade has a roof garden, and yes, you can actually go up there.

And boy, it’s one secret spot you gotta know.

Apart from the lush, laid-back setting, you also get full view of the buildings that make Singapore Singapore. 

A safe itinerary?

Have a good meal, go for a stroll along the Singapore River and head up to the roof for a full, aesthetic view of Marina Bay Sands, the Singapore River and One Fullerton.

Isn’t it so romantic? 

Although you can bring along a picnic mat and have some casual dining there, but it would probably be overkill for your date.

A person can only be that perfect. #justsaying

6. Marina at Keppel Bay

Ever felt like escaping Singapore?

Well, there’s a way to, and you don’t even have to be physically out of Singapore.

Meet Keppel Bay, the escape destination Singaporeans need but don’t deserve.

Explore the area with your date, gawk at majestic, way-out-of-your-league yachts that you will probably never be able to afford this lifetime, and walk the beautiful bridges overlooking the bays. Close your eyes, take a deep breath, and imagine you’re in another country.

You might actually believe it.

Incidentally, Keppel Bay was awarded the title of Asia’s Best Marina. And after traversing there, you will probably find it hard to argue otherwise.

Once you’re done feeling like a country bumpkin, you can either dine at exquisite restaurants like Prive, Takumi Restaurant and The Island Suite or choose to head elsewhere for a more budget-friendly option.

Seeing how you clicked on this article in the first place, it might be wiser to pick the latter.

Take note that the area might be hard to get to with public transport, but it’s very likely to be well worth the effort.

7. Bukit Timah Railway Tracks

Alright, I get it. This one’s more for the nature lovers, and perhaps photography enthusiasts.

But still, it’s free, and there’s not quite anything like exploring an abandoned railway bridge with your date partner.

Plus, taking Insta-worthy pictures for one another would always serve to alleviate tension and heighten the excitement. 🙂

Anyway, if you’re still with me, this black iron railway bridge stretches over Bukit Timah Road, Rochor River and Dunearn Road, and is honestly quite a rare sight, especially in Singapore.

Apart from disconnected railway tracks, the surviving infrastructure will also have you gawking at it like a stunned rabbit.

And if you’re worried about accessibility, don’t, because the bus stop is just 2 minutes away.

Incidentally, should you get bored of snapping a thousand perfect photos, you can always take to the nature trail of Bukit Timah Greenway for a 3km-ish trek.

8. Jurong Hill

Now I know what you’re thinking.

I wanna go on a date, not a hike! 

Though if you think about it, they are actually very, very similar in many ways, like how they both get your heart going boom, boom, boom. But let’s not digress from the original topic.

Located right beside Jurong Bird Park, Jurong Hill Park is a quiet, unassuming place with plenty of attractions and none of the expenses for your cheapo- I mean well-thought out date.

Follow Jurong Hill road up to the peak and you will discover a tranquil garden and a spiralling tower situated at the top. The Jurong Hill Lookout Tower, as it’s called, was constructed in the 1970s, and once hosted Elizabeth II, Queen of England herself on its lands. A date can’t get any more royal than that, can it?

Many of the famous dignitaries also planted trees in a commemorative effort of their visit, and you can still see them today in a garden at the foot of the tower.

Climb to the top of the lookout tower and be rewarded with a panoramic view of the surrounding area.

Our advice? Finish up just as it gets dark.

There’s nothing quite like a glimpse of the twinkling stars before you catch some well-deserved dinner.

But one thing issue with this place is that it can get pretty crowded, even at 12:00 a.m. So while it’s romantic, too many people know about it now; after this article, I think you might just have to squeeze in #justsaying

9. Orchard Central Roof Garden

Situated closer to Somerset station, this garden can be accessed by taking the lift to the 11th floor and followed by the escalator to the rooftop.

And what a view it is up there!

Granted, there’s not much to do in the garden apart from taking pictures (hopping onto the ornament and pretend you’re a knight in shining armour maybe?) but we reckon taking a short walk around to admire the scenery while snapping some perfectly aesthetic selfies doesn’t sound like such a bad deal.

What’s more, a bunch of whipping good Japanese restaurants, including Tanuki Raw and Kiseki, are landed right smack in the mall. Wouldn’t it just be great to have a satisfying meal, take the lift to the 11th floor and enjoy some cool, breezy and free scenery?
