Remember back when news of Westgate opening hit the headlines? Everyone was excited about the upcoming mall that promised to bring the town into the sleepy west of Singapore.
Fast forward a few months and you’ll see a very different mall. Shops were opening and closing, and you can see closing-down sales taking place in the mall all the time. But is Westgate really a has-been mall or are there some hidden gems in the mall? Here are 9Â hidden makan places in Westgate that you probably didn’t know about.

1. Curry Times

Opened by the founders of Old Chang Kee, Curry Times serves old-school Singaporean food like Golden Pillow (a bun with a huge ton of curry within), Curry Puffs, Prata and Nasi Lemak. If you’re there, be sure to order their Laksa Goreng which is fragrant, delicious yet affordable at only $7.90++.
2. Pho Street
In the mood for some Vietnamese fare? Why not try Pho Street opened by Select Group? If you can eat beef, go for their signature Beef Pho. If you’re looking for something more exotic, give their bun cha a try.
3. Griddy
They were the talk of the town with their crazy waffle combinations. Call it blasphemy but we prefer their fusion spaghetti series over their waffle burgers. In the mood for some spice? Go for their Spaghetti with Battered Chicken and Laksa Sauce. Leave the waffles for dessert. Trust me.
Food Republic
Food Republic is known for their food court fare (which means meh, normal plus expensive), but trust me, we managed to uncover three gems within this particular Food Republic.
4. Yong Tau Foo
This Yong Tau Foo stall deep-fries your fried items for you and places them on a separate plate. They have a bowl of beans at the side where you can add as much as you want to your soup. Go on, they won’t mind! If you’re making your way there after work, make sure you reach before 8 because choices after that are extremely limited.
5. Food Republic Qiu Lian Ban Mee
The difference between a good ban mee and a bad one doesn’t lie in the noodles, but in the broth. At least that holds true for me. For fellow broth lovers, this is the good one. It’s flavourful yet not overly salty, and the serving is pretty generous too.
6. Food Republic Tutu Kueh
Chewy and filled with a generous portion of your favourite filling, munching on one of these while walking around the mall is probably a memory you should create for yourself.
7. Isetan Cream Puffs
As connoisseurs of cream puffs, we have tried all sorts of puffs before, from Season’s Durian puffs to Beardpapa, our favourite pick is still Isetan’s Cream Puff. Filled with a generous amount of delectable cream and custard, you’ll find yourself reaching for one more puff even if they’re supposed to be for your family. And to top it off, Isetan always has Japanese food fairs in its outlet from time to time where authentic Japanese people travel to Singapore and sell authentic Japanese food. Better than Super Matsuri, that’s for sure. P/S: The Matcha is a must-try.

8. Sushi Express
When we’re talking about affordable sushi, Sushi Express is one name that never fails to pop up in your mind. When you’re there, go for their Aburi Salmon Sushi and soup which has a huge portion of sushi within. And to top it off, it’s only $1.50 per plate.
9. Osaka Osho
Looking to pamper yourself yet not willing to spend a bomb on your meal? Check out this place which sells affordable set meals that are satisfying and delicious yet wallet-friendly. Save some space for what I like to call their dessert gyoza with black bean paste filling.
